• When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

  As a child, my Father introduced me to historical sites and I had the pleasure of walking the Parthenon while still at Primary School. Talking to my Grandfather about his experiences of World War II from France 1940 to Dunkirk, El Alamein, Italy, D - Day+1 and beyond increased my desire for historical knowledge and awareness. Great teaching at Secondary School and a never - ending library of historical books at birthdays and Christmas - time cemented my love of History. An honours degree at Leeds followed and after a period of discovery I began teaching in 1999. A 25 year career in secondary education followed that was rewarding in every way. As I have now chosen to retire, tutoring is a perfect way to still engage with History and to work with young people to help them become the best historian that they can be.

• Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

  History is such a wonderful subject. The subject matter and content is a joy in itself. Some of the best tales and stories ever read are true! I have always had a particular preference for military history, although social, political and economic, still interest highly. I have a mastery of Medicine through time, Superpower relations and the Cold War, Norman England and Germany. However, I also have a very strong (and growing) expertise in Crime and Punishment, Elizabeth I, Henry VIII and Russia. All topics are just a revision session away and my sessions are always thoroughly planned (see comments section for evidence.)

• Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

  My Father was the first historian in my life and my inspiration in many ways beyond my love of history. Dr Warnes was my first great history teacher. I will never forget his lesson on the battle of Rorke's drift and his infectious enthusiasm for the subject. Throughout my career I have always strived to be an engaging teacher who is able to connect with and fuel aspirations in young people.

• What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

  It's very important to be a good listener. All my sessions are co-constructed and created to meet the bespoke needs of every student. Together, we will target skill gaps and content areas that require further mastery. Aside from that, reliability, consistency and boundless enthusiasm are important too!

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

  I remember once setting the classroom up to be the battle of Austerlitz and having French artillery fire paper cannon - balls at the Satchen Mere to drown the retreating Austro - Russians. Acting and filming the battle of Hastings was a highlight too. However, the greatest thrill was always sharing the celebrations on results day.

• What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

  Perceptions of history change. I was introduced to history in a very different world. It's vital to keep abreast of new interpretations and perceptions. I have really enjoyed working with a student on the Migrants in Britain development study for the first time this exam season. It is vital to always approach the evidence with an open mind and to listen and reflect on the opinions of others.

• Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

  As before, I am a military history enthusiast. I lead tours of my friends all over Europe visiting battlefields. Normandy, Ypres, the Somme, Arras, Verdun, Waterloo, Spain and Germany have all been explored at length! I may investigate the merits of professional battlefield tours as time goes on. Matching two of my passions. Encouraging the next geenration of historians whilst walking the battlefields.
