About Jed

With over 14 years of teaching experience, I am an expert tutor in nearly all math and science subjects, most recently having been a Lecturer at Princeton University's Physics Department for several years. I have developed a reputation for empathy and connection with students at all levels of interest, skill, and academic performance. In addition to being an experienced tutor in math, physics, and other sciences, I have demonstrated success in helping students improve their grades and test scores in myriad areas, such as World and European History, Economics, reading comprehension, and the SAT, ACT, Subject Tests, and AP Exams. (My own personal testing record includes near-perfect SAT and Subject Test scores, and 5’s on 12 AP exams: Biology, Chemistry Physics B, Calculus, European History, US History, Government/Civics, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics, English Language, and Spanish.) I have served as an academic mentor for students from middle school through graduate school, guiding them through complicated research projects, and keeping them on track with schoolwork, organization, and confidence building. With my wide array of interests, I know how to find ways to connect with and understand my students while establishing camaraderie in order to better improve their learning experience.

On the non-teaching side, I am a professional physicist and hold BA degrees in Physics and Mathematics from UC Berkeley and a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics from Princeton University, with 12 years of research experience in particle physics and 5 years in data science in private industry. I am also an active referee for the world-renowned Physical Review Letters journal.

Across over 14 years of teaching experience, my teaching philosophy is centered upon Active Learning, where the student does the work and solves the problem under the watchful eye and guiding support of the tutor. This approach has been proven in the pedagogical literature as being more effective for most students than traditional lecturing on the board. As we proceed through the content and questions I can find out effectively where the student is struggling and then target those areas and enhance the student's overall understanding in the most effective way. Throughout the process, I customize my approach to the student. In a typical lesson, we start with a few minutes to go over what has transpired recently and/or since our last session, progress on assignments and homework, etc. Then we proceed through the subjects and problems that have already been highlighted by the student, preferably doing actual problems. If the student has not sent any information beforehand or has not done assigned homework, then we have to play it by ear, but usually it doesn't take too long to identify the problems that we can start working on. Throughout the lesson, we might have to improvise which problems to cover, which to skip, and how much interludes for mini-lectures in the middle make sense. Then we plan for the next session, assign homework, etc.
