About Peter
The word most frequently used by my students in course evaluations to describe me is kind. Learning is never improved by increasing the stress levels. My focus is always on the student's learning.
My own primary research focus is sustainability and I come at the topic from many directions - economics, sociology, anthropology, communications, political science, history, as well as the natural sciences. As a life-long learner, my perspective continues to evolve and so I rarely see issues as either "right" or "wrong". Learning how to think and how to evaluate a given knowledge is much more important than learning what to think or how to simply produce a new knowledge. Knowledges are never ethically neutral - they need to be appropriate for a specific context.
Students should be given a clear picture of what any particular course is about from the outset. Self-directed, university-level students already have a research question in mind, whether fully developed of not. The tutor has a responsibility to assist in the development of the research question, to bring current research to the attention of the students, and to help situate the research question within the current sociocultural as well as ecological context at various scales.
