About Bruce
I started teaching at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Community College when I was studying linguistics, language teaching methodology, and Japanese at the University of British Columbia in 1985.
I worked at the English Language Institute at the University of British Columbia until I moved to Japan and started working there for almost 11 years. For nine years I worked at Kagawa University and Tokushima Bunri University teaching English for Communication and Academic Preparation.
In 1997, I moved back to Canada and taught at the University of British Columbia, and Langara College, teaching academic English courses.
In 2000, I started working at Simon Fraser University in the English Bridge Program, and I started teaching Media courses at the University of British Columbia in the Faculty of Education.
I continued teaching media at the University of British Columbia, but I then also started to teach at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2003 I taught academic preparation courses, and I developed grammar courses for their Language Studies Program.
In 2009, I moved to Vancouver Island and started to teach academic preparation courses at Vancouver Island University.
In 2014, I started to work for international academic support at VIU tutoring international and domestic credit students in research, referencing, academic writing, literature reviews, and resume writing.

My personal teaching method involves engaging students by motivating them to succeed and achieve their goals. I involve students in their learning and consequently find intrinsic motivation. One of the most important factors of engaging students is to make learning fun and also give the students the feeling of achievement they need to stay positive and achieve their goal.
By using clear models and instructions, students can see the target they’re trying to achieve. I’ve been successful using this method with everything from pronunciation to APA referencing.
