About Scott
The last 30 years have given me the experience and knowledge required to publish over 15 books for middle grade, young adult and adult audiences. In that 30 years, I have also operated a creative writing workshop with other writers - both seasoned and new. And with that group our goal is constant learning to become better. We check egos at the door and get down to the business of writing better stories. Now, I want to bring that journey to more people. After all, without great artists holding a mirror to the world around us, how does humanity pass down its legacy.

1. Foundational Philosophy • Every adult student comes with a different background: some want to publish a novel, others just want a creative outlet. • The strategy should blend diagnostic assessment, custom curriculum building, and flexible feedback loops. • Goal: move them from where they are to where they want to be with concrete progress markers. 2. Three-Phase Structure Phase 1: Diagnostic & Goal-Setting • Initial Interview/Questionnaire: Learn their writing experience, favorite genres, time commitment, and ultimate goals (e.g., “finish a short story,” “build a daily writing habit,” “prepare a novel for publication”). • Writing Sample Review: Have them submit 1–3 pages of their writing (fiction or nonfiction). Assess voice, grammar, narrative control, and story sense. • Level Placement: o Beginner: Needs craft foundations (plot, character, setting, dialogue). o Intermediate: Needs structural refinement, style development, and feedback cycles. o Advanced: Needs editorial-level coaching, publication guidance, and polishing. • Customized Roadmap: Draft a 4–12 week plan tailored to their goals. Phase 2: Lesson Customization Each lesson follows a flexible 3-part design: 1. Mini-Craft Lecture (10–20 min) o Beginner: Show, don’t tell; point of view; story beginnings. o Intermediate: Scene vs. summary, pacing, subtext. o Advanced: Stylistic polish, thematic layering, revision strategies. 2. Hands-On Writing Practice (20–30 min) o Prompt or micro-exercise linked directly to the craft focus. o Scaled to their level (a beginner writes a scene sketch; an advanced student rewrites the same scene from a different POV to explore depth). 3. Feedback & Discussion (20–30 min) o Student shares writing aloud or submits for line notes. o Discussion centers on what’s working, what’s not, and how it ties to their larger project. Phase 3: Ongoing Feedback & Growth • Weekly Assignments: A mix of generative prompts and project-based work. • Milestones: o Beginner: Finish one polished short scene or story. o Intermediate: Draft a complete short story or novella chapter. o Advanced: Revise toward publishable quality and submit to contests/magazines. • Reflection Check-ins: Every 4 weeks, revisit goals. Ask: Are you progressing toward your desired outcome? Do we need to pivot? 3. Student-Centered Customization Tactics • Genre Alignment: Teach craft through their favorite genre (e.g., show tension in horror vs. romance). • Learning Style Match: o Analytical learners → emphasize story structure, outlines, models. o Experiential learners → emphasize freewrites, roleplay, immersive prompts. o Visual learners → use diagrams, storyboards, scene maps. • Scaffolding: Introduce complexity gradually (from sentences → scenes → full stories). • Choice & Autonomy: Let students pick themes or projects that feel personally meaningful. 4. Feedback Philosophy • Always balance affirmation (what’s strong) with direction (what can improve). • Tailor feedback language: o Beginner: clear, encouraging, focus on effort and discovery. o Intermediate: push toward risk-taking and experimentation. o Advanced: precise editorial critique, professional-level standards. End result: A bespoke tutoring strategy where no two students have the same roadmap, but each feels guided toward their personal definition of “writing success.”
