About Mandy
I began as a qualified and experienced English, Art and Drama teacher. Went to work in PR then in women's magazine journalism as editor and health, beauty and fashion writer and stylist. After that I worked as curator and marketer at an art gallery in Parkhurst where I also taught creative workshops to adults and children. In 2017 I studied Writing Poetry Honours at WITS University and completed a Poetry Chapbook titled Sensitive Matters. Last year, during lockdown I wrote my first novel, a work of Young Adult fiction in the Magical Realism genre and am now in the process of writing a second and getting the first published. I want to teach again because I miss it and also want to share what I've learnt and love with others.

My teaching method is to find out where the student is at and what will inspire and motivate them to believe in their ability to reach their goal. I will work with you on your current high school or university curriculum and projects, essays, etc. or can deliver planned lessons you want on the given area you want to learn or improve in line with the qualification you want to earn. I have taught from mid junior school all the way through to matric and also collage/university students as well as seniors who wish to write creatively again or refresh their knowledge. I am as comfortable unpacking Shakespeare and classical literature with you according to academic standards and the Queen's English as I am helping you understand poetry nuance, or unpack feminist literature like Atwood's "A Handmaid's Tale". I also enjoy teaching children how to read and have experience with second language learners from China to those whose first language is an African language.
I believe that learning anything is a process of putting in the time and focus to learn the rules; read and study those who have done it well before you; and then discovering where and how you can break the rules and grow your own creative wings. Every subject, whether spelling, reading, writing creatively or factually should be approached with balance. I also believe in applying mindfulness or awareness, to every process, wherever possible. I use my yoga practice and experience as a yoga teacher and student of yogic philosophy for twenty-two years, to help others when they learn. I am also a qualified art teacher and paint myself so can also teach drawing, art theory, painting and unleash your inner creativity/heal through art/flow again lessons. I also host themed art workshops titled "Learn to draw with Scissors, after Matisse and many others and have taught The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron as a course to adults and have used it in my own life to propel me to write a novel and become a yoga teacher and to live creatively no matter what. I love helping others do the same and my art lessons strive to do this above all.

Details
I do have a cancellation policy - lessons needs to be cancelled 48 hours in advance, unless it is an exceptional emergency. If they are not payment is due. If 24 hours notice is given and I able to a lesson can be rescheduled. I only teach online unless the student lives within a 10km radius of my home and can travel to my house on arrangement. If I need to drive to someone's house, they need to live nearby and a separate fee inclusive of petrol and travel time, made.
