About Syuen Yee

Hey there! I'm Syuen Yee. I have received 4 Top Scorer Awards for Bahasa Melayu in my secondary school years as well as 2 championship titles in Pertandingan Syarahan for both lower secondary and upper secondary level. I've once disliked Bahasa Melayu a lot as it was so pressuring for me. Then, I took the effort to learn the secret formulas to master this subject and it has become my forte ever since. I live by the motto of, 'When there's a will, there's a way' and so should you. For as long as we don't give up, nothing shall stand in our way! On the teaching spectrum, I've had experience teaching on Superprof since 2022! I gained interest in teaching when I was the head trainer for first aid in secondary school where I incorporated some movie ideas just to make learning a bit more fun! Here's a brief summary of my previous academic achievements: 1. UPSR - Straight 6As 2. Cambridge Checkpoint Primary (per 6.0) -Mathematics (6.0), Science (6.0), English as First Language (5.1) 3. PT3 - Straight 8As 4. Cambridge Checkpoint Form 3 (per 6.0) -Mathematics (6.0), Science (6.0), English as First Language (5.0) 5. IGCSE - Straight 5A*s (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, English) 6. SPM - Straight 9As (7A+2A) - A+ in Bahasa Melayu 7. Full Scholarship A-Levels Recipient 8. Offeree of Biasiswa JPA JKPJ Program Khas Korea 9. AS Levels - Straight 4As (Pure Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics) 10. A-Levels - Straight 4As (1A* 3As) (Biology, Chemistry, Pure Maths, Physics) - INTI Top Scorer in Cambridge A-Levels

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am fluent in this language not because it's my native tongue, but because I was deeply inspired by a dedicated teacher. She transformed what I once found challenging into a rewarding journey. I aspire to ignite the same passion in my Superprof students.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Upin and Ipin are fictional characters who enriched my understanding of this language. Their portrayal reflects the rich tapestry of Malaysian culture and the beauty of the Malay language.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

I cherish the proverb "berakit-rakit ke hulu, berenang-renang ke tepian, bersakit-sakit dahulu, bersenang-senang kemudian." It embodies the idea that persistence pays off. This adage serves as valuable life advice for me.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking this language enables me to embrace Malaysia's national identity and fosters better communication with fellow Malaysians. It deepens my connection to the roots of my country.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main challenge in learning Malay lies in comparing it to one's mother tongue, such as English. It can be tough when students expect similarities, but every language has its unique nuances. My advice is to approach Malay with an open mind.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I once lacked confidence in my Malay skills during primary school. I struggled with assignments and comprehension. However, the lesson "study smart, not hard" proved invaluable. Efficiency in learning is key to progress.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Living in Malaysia, my weekly visits to local eateries provide a platform to practice Malay with native speakers. It also exposes me to common slang and colloquial expressions.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

My passion and dedication drive me as a Superprof. Teaching is a joy, and sharing knowledge with eager learners is rewarding. Having been a student myself, I empathize with the challenges students face when learning Malay. Drawing from my experiences, I'm committed to clarifying any doubts my students may have.
