About Ai Kyen
Hi, I’m Kyennie! I’m a JSA Certified Royal Icing Instructor and sugar cookie artist, but my cookie journey actually started with me teaching myself.
I started decorating cookies in Angola, where decorated sugar cookies weren’t something you came across very often. In the beginning, I had no teacher standing next to me. I learned by experimenting, practicing, making lots of mistakes and figuring things out by myself, from getting the right icing consistency to understanding why my cookies cratered or why my piping wasn’t doing what I wanted it to do.
As I became more serious about the craft, I wanted to take my skills further and learn from people who had truly mastered it. I flew to Taiwan to complete my JSA Royal Icing Instructor certification, and later traveled back to Malaysia to learn from other master royal icing and cookie artists.
Being self-taught first and professionally trained later has really shaped the way I teach.
I remember what it feels like to look at your icing and think, “Why is this not working?!” I also know how much time you can spend trying to figure out one tiny problem when sometimes all you need is someone to show you what you’re doing wrong.
That’s why I want to teach and share what I’ve learned — not only the techniques from my professional training, but also the little tricks, mistakes and lessons I picked up from figuring things out on my own.
I want my lessons to feel relaxed, practical and personal. You can ask questions, make mistakes and learn at your own pace.
Because I truly believe you don’t have to be naturally artistic to create beautiful cookies. Sometimes you just need the right technique, a little patience and someone to guide you along the way.

You don’t need any experience. If you’ve never held a piping bag before, that’s completely fine! We’ll start from the basics and work our way up together. My lessons are very hands-on, and I’ll guide you step by step throughout.
I’ll teach you how to understand royal icing consistency (honestly, this is the most important part!), how to control your piping bag, outline and flood your cookies, pipe details, create royal icing transfers, do lettering, and get that clean finish we all love.
If you already decorate cookies, we can skip the basics and focus on the areas you want to improve.
I’m a JSA Certified Royal Icing Instructor, but I’m also a sugar cookie artist myself, so I’ll share all the little tips, mistakes, and things I’ve learned along the way, not just what you read in a book.
“How do you get that perfectly puffy icing?”
“Why does your icing crater?”
“How do you get clean lettering?”
“How do you finally get the right royal icing consistency?” and many more…
These are the little things that can make such a big difference, and we’ll work through them together so you understand not only what to do, but why it works.
Beginner or advanced, we’ll go at your pace. And most importantly, I want you to have fun with it. Royal icing can be frustrating sometimes, but once you understand how it works, it’s honestly so much fun and so versatile.
