Kia Ora! I am an ex kura kaupapa student fluent in te reo, I'm passionate about my Maori culture and would love to spread my knowledge to those willing to learn :)

About Mahuika
I understand it can be intimidating to learn Te Reo Maori, especially if you are of Maori descent and lack that connection to who you are and where you come from. I grew up in a family where we knew little, to no knowledge about where we came from, but since then I have gained connection. Everyone's journey is different and there is no particular place to start, however learning Te Reo Maori is a giant step in the right direction.
For those of you who don't have any hereditary connection to Maori, you are, of course, more than welcome to learn as I am always delighted to see someone who is interested in my culture and people, no matter where you come from.
All I ask is that you trust in me to teach you the ropes in a welcoming space. However, this basic Maori class is designed for you to leave, so that you can go and pursue another class at a higher level and constantly improve.

I will be starting with pronunciation, simple terms, and phrases, working my way up as you, the student, progress into structured sentences. The typical length of my sessions will be 45 minutes to 1 hour, once or twice a week depending on the workload of whoever I'm teaching as well as my own.
I have NCEA levels 1, 2, and 3 in Te Reo Maori and NCEA level 1, and 2 in Te Reo Rangatira (accelerate Maori) awarded to me by NZQA. I studied at a Kura Kaupapa Maori which means for 6 years of my schooling I was only allowed to speak Maori, no English. I do not personally have any teaching experience however am more than confident in teaching the basic terms and making sure that my student understands and has my undivided attention during our sessions. I have helped some of my family and friends gain a basic understanding of the language which helped them go on to a higher education in Te Reo Maori.
Teaching my family and friends compared to teaching online will be different for me since with the people who are close to me are around me day to day. Due to these being online sessions, I am going to be using canva to put together material and will be sending these to you for us to refer back to during sessions and also if you wanted to practice Te Reo in your own time. I will also make a google forms survey to try navigate where you're at with your reo at the moment so I have a little bit more of an idea on where to start with you.
- These are just starting foundations and I can try my best to tailor to your needs. I'm very understanding of the fact that people learn and communicate differently.
The lessons I will be teaching are aimed towards any age from 10+. For adults, remember that it is never too late to learn something new.

Details
First session is a free 30 minutes for me to make my first impression and see where you are at with your reo Maori journey in order for me to gain an understanding on what I need to prepare behind the scenes to make your learning experience more specific to what you need - everyone begins somewhere.
FYI - 'travel' is set at $0 because unfortunately I will not be travelling, sessions will be done over video chat :)
