About Riku
Hi! My name is Riku Emura. I was born and raised in Kobe, Japan, and moved to the United States four years ago after graduating from high school in Japan.
I recently earned my Bachelor's degree in Communication from San Diego State University. My long-term goal is to become a baseball translator and interpreter, which inspired me to study in the United States and develop a deep understanding of both American and Japanese language and culture.
As a native Japanese speaker who has experienced learning and living in a different language environment, I understand both the challenges and rewards of language learning. My English is fluent, allowing me to clearly explain Japanese grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and cultural concepts to English-speaking students.
I am passionate about helping others learn Japanese and sharing the culture behind the language. Whether you are studying Japanese for school, travel, business, anime, or personal interest, I strive to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where students can build confidence and enjoy the learning process.

My approach is student-centered and flexible.
I adjust my teaching methods and plans based on their Japanese proficiency levels and their purpose for learning Japanese.
I focus on teaching them basic grammar because it is fundamental knowledge to learn Japanese in any way. Additionally, it helps me encourage them to actively speak Japanese rather than speaking memorized word-for-word during the class.
I start with a casual conversation in Japanese to assess their Japanese level, create a comfortable learning environment, and teach them the native style of casual greetings in Japanese. After the conversation, I introduce the lesson topic, which may include grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, reading, writing, or listening practice. I also provide examples from real-life situations and Japanese culture to make learning more practical and engaging.
I am patient, supportive, and committed to helping students gain confidence in their Japanese abilities.

At first I didn’t understand differential equations at all, Riku was so kind to teach me through all my errors and now I’m a pro. He’s also really cool.

Riku is an amazing Japanese language tutor. He is incredibly patient, kind and has a great sense of humor! I got to know him in college and even got to visit him in Japan.
