  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

Being the son of a civil engineer, I have always had an informative and encouraging environment which helped me develop a keen interest in understanding the different aspects of civil engineering. With my good score in the engineering entrance test, I secured admission in one of the topmost engineering institutes of India. The course structure offered by their Civil Engineering department was outstanding and my understanding in the field has been fundamentally strong since then.
I have seen all my family members tutoring at different phases of their lives. Teaching is in our blood and the legacy starts from my mother (Thank you maa). Since class 10, I use to assist her in checking the answer sheets and on some occasions even tutoring in her absence. I believe that if you have a passion for a particular subject and the expertise to match, tutoring is a great profession to move into. I have been involved in private tutoring for over 10 years. The roles kept changing but the passion is still the same. Teaching gives me the satisfaction I need in life. To make teaching my professional career I am now pursuing my PhD from QUT in the field of transportation engineering.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less)

Over the last 10 years, I have taught various subjects to different levels of students. I started with Foundation Mathematics, Science and Physics during my early days of tutoring. I still teach these basic subjects but now with a completely new mindset wherein I try to include real-life examples from the respective students’ future interest area. A strong foundation in these subjects has helped me to explain even the most complex concepts of civil engineering very effectively with ease. During my bachelors, I taught maths and science in one of the most reputed coaching institutes of India to students of class 8th and 9th. Since my postgraduation, I have been teaching the concepts of Basic and Advanced statistics to High school and undergrad students of different faculties. If required, I teach statistics with programming languages like R, SPSS, Advanced Excel, and Python with real data. I did my masters in transportation engineering and planning and since then I have also taught the various subjects related to the transportation engineering domain.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes. My mother. She has an experience of over 25 years and has had the most profound impact in shaping my career. I have always been fascinated by the way she can breakdown even the most complex concepts in any subject into small simple and easy to understand concepts. This is something that I believe all the tutors should have. It can help students in grasping the concepts quickly and can remember the concepts for a lifetime.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A well-prepared, modest, ethical, and flexible tutor would be the best tutor according to me. A well-prepared tutor would be efficient and would not waste a student’s time and money. Another important quality, in my opinion, is the moral principles of a tutor. In my opinion, a tutor should be updated with the state-of-practice and should be ready to tutor under any circumstances and mode of presentation. And lastly, a tutor should be able to maintain a friendly environment around the students to make sure that the student is not afraid to ask even the simplest questions.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I have had a few memorable incidents in my academic life. However, the most valuable in shaping my career as a tutor is the most recent one. While I was pursuing my Masters, I was supposed to present a case study of financial scam in India. For this, I had to investigate a real scam that occurred in the past and explain to the other class members. Since we all belonged to non-financial backgrounds, it was extremely important for me to understand the case and explain it in such a way that was easy for others to understand. I spent a good amount of time in preparing my notes, presentation slides and an animated video (coolest part 😊 ). I gave the presentation and my supervisor was very impressed. This incident made me realise that if I spend enough time on a subject, I can process that information and have the skills to clearly explain it to anyone.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

The major challenge that I initially faced while teaching was the variations in the course structure of students studying in Australia or any other countries for that matter. Since my teaching experience was limited to India, it took me a while to understand and catch up with the requirements of students. But now with the help of Superprof, I have been able to get in touch with more students hailing from diverse countries. This has helped me to gain good experience in teaching international students.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am passionate about teaching. Being highly influenced by my Mother, I was always curious to find new ways to simplify concepts. Later during my Masters’ days, I realised my ability to explain the out-of-field topics to anyone with ease. This further fueled my passion for teaching. It also helps me to dig in into new topics and keep learning!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions 😄)?

Superprofs, in my opinion, are the ones who can build strong, personal relationships with their students. When a tutor listens and spends time building a relationship with his or her student, that tutor can truly personalise the learning, incorporate connections to the student's interests, teach to their strengths and minimise their weaknesses. A true Superprof would make learning real, relevant and rigorous. Such tutors would certainly be experts in their academic content and would know the subject's concepts, ideas and problems inside out.
