About Jude
Hello! My name is Jude Mayer, and I am a jazz bassist, composer, and music educator offering online jazz double bass lessons.
As a performing musician and student of advanced music theory and jazz analysis through the University of Arkansas, I focus on connecting technical development on the instrument with a deeper understanding of harmony, rhythm, and improvisation. My playing experience as a working jazz bassist informs my teaching, especially in real-world performance situations, ensemble playing, and developing a strong time feel.
In lessons, we can work on fundamentals such as tone production, intonation, shifting, and left-hand/right-hand technique, as well as jazz-specific skills like walking bass lines, chord tone outlining, voice leading, transcribing, and improvisation. I also emphasize ear training and harmonic understanding so that students can confidently navigate jazz standards and live performance settings.
My goal is to help each student become a more confident, musical, and independent bassist, with the tools to perform and think like a jazz musician. Whether you're just starting to develop your jazz playing or looking to deepen your improvisational voice, I tailor lessons to your needs and help you grow from there.

I can teach any beginning student all the fundamentals and help create a personalized practice schedule. We can work on anything you want from jazz to funk to classical and so on. Jazz pizzicato, bowing, classical techniques, thumb position, electric bass left and right hand technique and more!
