About Rick
Rick is a busy London based drummer and educator of twenty years. His passion for drums had its genesis in a small cul-de-sac in Southampton. Of the ten houses on his street, four contained drummers! Most nights, Rick would be drawn to a different house to listen, watch and eventually be taught how play different grooves and styles. The possibilities were endless. The feelings of those early experiences with the drums left a lasting impression.
After getting comfortable with gigs in pubs and clubs in and around Southampton, Rick then went on to study Music, Music Performance and Music Tech at A-Level before graduating with a Higher Diploma from The Academy Of Contemporary Music in Guildford in 2006. Since then, he has been fortunate enough to make a successful career as a freelance drummer, playing 1000s of gigs, touring nationally and internationally with pop and rock acts such as Chlöe Howl, Summer camp, Noisettes and Nick Harrison, supporting the likes of Ellie Goulding, Bastille, John Newman, Miley Cyrus, Tom Odell, to name a few.
Rick has also been honoured to be able to perform sessions and gigs for BBC Maida Vale, BBC Live Lounge, Roundhouse, Somerset House and record at world renowned studios such as Miloco, Rak and the legendary Abbey Road Studios.
Alongside teaching and gigging, Rick is also a highly accomplished dance accompanist (drums and piano) of 13 years. A dance accompanist's role is to provide improvised composition of a musical part or piece that supports and partners the physical movement of a group of dancers. Other than musical skill, the job requires grit and the courage to express yourself and try something new. This is a quality that Rick endeavours to pass on to all of his students.

Hi, I'm Rick - thanks for checking out my page!
Im a professional drum teacher and have experience teaching all ages from beginner to advanced. I work hard to find a good balance between fun and focus and tailor this balance to each individual student.
For a first timer, lessons would focus on building confidence through developing a good understanding of the basics, including the right (and wrong) ways to hold the sticks, exploring concepts like time keeping and groove, dynamics, explaining some basic musical terminology and introducing you to reading music.
Once we have laid an adequate foundation for subsequent learning, I like to encourage my students to formulate some short, medium and long term goals for us to aim at. Whether they be learning how to play a particular song or style, or playing your first gig, to developing an effective practice routine or passing grade exams.
Like anything worth doing, learning and improving on the drums takes a level of commitment, but this can be incredibly rewarding. With the right teacher and practice schedule, you can see amazing leaps of improvement much faster than you'd think.
My lessons are 60 minutes long, either in-person or online. Home visits can be discussed too if this works better for you.
I have an enhanced DBS certificate, safeguarding certificate and am fully first aid trained.
