About Mudit

In the span of my career of 12+ years, I have grown from a Professional Photographer to Cinematographer, Filmmaker and an Entrepreneur. These days I am expanding into workshop space with new live mentorship courses in Photography, Macro and Bird Photography Expertise Program, a special program for people looking to get in the field professionally and even teaching coloring and photo-manipulation in Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. My journey with photography began in 2010 while I was attending National Institute of Advertising (NIA). I became the photographer for my institute and took up freelance design projects such as Brochures, Posters, Pamphlets, Coffee-table Books and other print and digital media…While traveling across the country on journalism, film and branding projects, I started exploring different genres of Photography and Videography. Be it landscape, portrait, food photography, product photography or wildlife photography, I did it all! Then I furthered my understanding of photography into film and cinematography while working alongside producers, directors and filmmakers at my job with a production house, and went on to work as a filmmaker for Prestigious brands, CSRs and NGOs completing more than 100 films and media works by 2018. Few of my films have bagged awards for Cinematography in film festivals across the country including Dada Saheb Phalke, Indo-Canadian film festivals. Indulging in my love for travel and adventures, I co-founded a travel project, ‘Pugdundi’, organizing trips to lesser-known parts in India, with a theme of touching the roots and the culture of the place and capturing it all on film. About 5 years ago, I co-founded a creative startup where we offer film and photography production, media and branding consultancy, digital media services & creative workshops. Now I want to give back the knowledge I have gained over the years and so I have curated courses on Photography and related fields.

  • Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

I teach Photography and Filmmaking - Cinematography and Video editing to be specific. My tryst with photography started in 2007. Just after I entered Design school and found the ability to polish my passion alongside studying design. It was a great opportunity to also put all the design knowledge and technicalities into my photography. I got my first project while I was in college to document the dying arts and cultures of Ladak, while I was still pursuing my communication design at the same institution, NIA (National Institute of Advertising).

There was no turning back after that. My most treasured companion became the camera and I kept indulging myself into the art of Photography and soon, Filmmaking. For which, I bagged several awards at various festivals. The passion for photography at this time was so much that I chose to keep my passion pure by not indulging further into photography commercially. I entrusted myself into a Video production house to test my skills further as an assistant filmmaker alongside well known film personnel. This journey into film was not easy but because I was young and was eager to learn more. I learnt all the nuances of cinematography as well as of video editing, and soon became a director at the same production house in a span of 3 years. After which, I became an independent documentary and film maker. I got opportunities to work for well known banners like GE, UNICEF, Coke, Nokia, Pepsico, Reckitt Benckiser, Tech Mahindra Foundation etc. In the meanwhile I also bagged awards in Cinematography at an Indo-canadian film festival, Dadasaheb Phalke Film Festival. I founded a production house, by the name of Mudart. We even got a mention in the "The Guardian" for a short film project by the name of Ema Keithel for post production. And just recently in 2020, We bagged an award at the Hrishikesh International Film Festival for Origin of Cure, our Documentary for a brand NV LIFE.
  • What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

I felt the need to give back by coming back to disseminating the education on the power of visuals when many people asked me to help them learn the tact of photography and camerawork used in film. To all the people who wanted to learn I was never able to give more than a few tips that didn't help and left them hanging. So I chose to create courses for formal training that were woven, keeping in mind, beginners, amateurs and even enthusiasts who have reached a level of expertise.
I chose to cover all aspects of photography extensively to help create a strong foundation for anyone and everyone, who is curious to learn the multiple dimensions in which the mind of the visual storyteller thinks. So after my achievements and 12 years of experience, I felt the need to give back by sharing my learnings. I have been teaching for over a year now. Today I feel blessed having taught over 100 students who inspire each other and I feel happy for each one of their achievements.
  • How does your work help society?

Visuals are everywhere, one may not be a creative professional in the times of today, but realising the visual language and learning to appreciate visual art is a skill which is used most frequently. It's a feather in one's cap in terms of just being more intelligent, rather smart in the race of time. Teaching forever has been known to be one of the noblest professions. The rest can be summed up by the intelligent themselves. Really, I don't think bragging about how I'm doing a favour to society is the point. The point is how I'm doing something for myself and the student who wishes to learn and gain knowledge, and this connection for me is sacred.
  • If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

There are many contemporary visual storytellers who inspire me but, I'd just like to say that I try to keep my liking based on each art piece. That's why I have many favourites. If I were to name some, here are a few: Ansel Adams, Andy Parkinson, Raghu Rai, Amrita Shergill, David Lynch, Salvador Dali, Krzysztof Kieślowski, Andei Tarkowski, Stanley Kubrick, Wong Kar Wai, Wes Anderson... the list is endless
  • Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

I love to travel, observe, wonder, write, sing, play musical instruments(because music is in my blood) , sketch, photograph, and worry about the earth every now and then.
  • Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

All student-teacher stories have something beautiful in them. One such story which I can remember now is with a school girl with a clear head on her career choice, "I want to be a cinematographer" she said, still in 10th standard or so. She startled me from the first second, her confidence in herself oozing out constantly and mind it, tt wasn't overconfidence which is a character trait with all the teenagers generally. She, on the contrary, took me on and challenged me constantly during the workshop. I loved it because I got to feel like a school kid again, running after the cool tactics.
"Can you take a pan shot in motion?" she exclaimed. I did it for her. I felt we were going out of course at times but just completing her challenges made her eyes glisten with awe. So before I began the workshop there was almost an hour for which I was put into this challenge spree that covered from long exposure to multiple shutter and lightpainting to holding the monument.
It was almost as if she tested me first, before she felt comfortable and ready to learn. So seldom do you find such people full of life and with no preconceptions. I still remember that day and laugh when I meet her even now for shoots or projects.
