About Gurnam
I am Gurnam, an ARB-registered and RIBA Chartered Architect based in Leeds, with 25 years of professional experience in design and construction.
My career began in hands-on construction as a trained bricklayer and joiner before qualifying and practising as an architect. This combined background gives me a clear understanding of both creative design and the technical realities of how buildings are constructed. I have delivered numerous residential projects from concept design through planning and into construction, working directly with clients, consultants and contractors.
Alongside professional practice, I mentor students who are pursuing architecture and design. I specialise in narrative and concept-led design, helping students develop clear project ideas while ensuring their work aligns with syllabus requirements and marking criteria. Many students work hard but lose marks through misinterpretation of assessment objectives; I help translate expectations into structured, achievable outcomes.
My approach is professional, organised and encouraging. I set clear objectives, provide constructive feedback and ensure measurable progress in every session. Students leave lessons with greater clarity, stronger work and increased confidence.
I take pride in maintaining high standards of professionalism, reliability and preparation. My goal is not only to support academic success, but to help students develop the mindset, discipline and critical thinking required in architectural education and practice.

I mentor students at different stages of their architectural journey — from GCSE and A-Level through to university preparation and early architectural education.
My aim is to build confidence, clarity and direction. Architecture can feel overwhelming. I help students simplify their thinking, strengthen their narrative, and understand the technical realities behind their ideas.
A key part of my approach is understanding the syllabus and marking criteria. Many students work hard but miss grades because they do not fully align their work with assessment objectives. I help students decode marking schemes, understand what examiners are really looking for, and structure their projects so their effort translates into strong results.
I am supportive and patient, but I also ensure every session delivers measurable progress. Each lesson ends with clear objectives and practical next steps.
I offer a free 20-minute introductory session so you can decide if we are a good fit.
Lessons are tailored to individual needs, but commonly include:
CONCEPT AND NARRATIVE DEVELOPMENT
Building strong design stories and coherent project themes.
DESIGN REVIEW AND PORTFOLIO FEEDBACK
Structured critique aligned with syllabus expectations and marking criteria.
CONSTRUCTION AND TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT
Clear explanation of structure, materials and detailing to strengthen technical grades.
DRAWING, MODELLING AND REPRESENTATION

SOFTWARE GUIDANCE
Beginner to intermediate support in Revit and AutoCAD with professional standards in mind.
UNIVERSITY APPLICATION AND INTERVIEW PREPARATION
Portfolio refinement, personal statement feedback and mock interviews.
Lessons are suitable for students aged 14+, including GCSE, A-Level, university applicants and early university students.
My focus is not simply improving grades, but ensuring students fully understand their subject, meet assessment criteria confidently, and develop the mindset of a future architect.
