About GLORIA

I graduated in Cinema Studies and Italian Literature, and in 2010 I earned a certificate to teach Italian to foreign students. Since then, teaching Italian has been one of my greatest joys. When I moved to Glasgow in 2014, I started working with many wonderful students from all over the world, and every lesson has been a chance to share not only the language, but also the culture and spirit of Italy.

I also hold a TEFL certificate, which allows me to teach English as a foreign language. I truly love languages, travelling, and meeting new people, and I believe that learning should always feel inspiring and enjoyable. I constantly look for new ways to improve my teaching skills, because helping my students grow and feel confident is what motivates me the most.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Italian is my first language, as I was born and raised near Rome, Italy. I studied Italian literature and film studies at the University of Rome before moving to the UK in 2014.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I consider Leonardo da Vinci one of the greatest men of all time and undoubtedly one of the most famous Italian artists in history. Born in 1452 near Florence, few would have guessed he was destined for such greatness. In addition to being a remarkable artist, he made incredible contributions to engineering, architecture, science, urban planning, cartography, philosophy, and anatomy during the Renaissance. Driven by an insatiable curiosity and a passion for learning, Leonardo explored many different fields. .
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

The Italian language is famous for its musicality. I especially love the word "allora," which has a beautiful, melodic sound, "ti amo" and the phrase "ti voglio bene." This expression has no direct equivalent in other languages. It's different from "ti amo" (I love you). While "ti amo" expresses a deep, romantic love, "ti voglio bene" is used to show affection and care for friends, relatives, and parents.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Italian holds great significance for me as it's my mother tongue. Living in another country, it constantly brings me back to my origins and heritage. Speaking Italian has allowed me to connect with those who are either passionate about Italy or have Italian ancestry. I have dedicated myself to teaching Italian so that others can enjoy its centuries-old culture, discover its melodic sounds, and appreciate its many nuances.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

One of the biggest challenges in learning Italian is its complex grammar, particularly the verb tenses and prepositions. I always tell my students not to get discouraged and to try speaking, even when they don't feel confident. Even if the grammar isn't perfect, Italians will understand them. Language isn't just about grammar-it's about culture, casual speech, and especially in Italy, body language and hand gestures! Gesturing is a big part of our culture!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I remember my childhood school days very well, and my teacher Mary, who taught me Italian literature and art. Even after many years, I still remember her lessons. At the age of 9, thanks to the love of poetry she instilled in me, I started writing poems. I still have that notebook. I believe that a good teacher can bring out your talents and inclinations.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

In the past, I travelled a lot in Italy with my parents. One trip, in particular, left a deep impression on me. It was to Recanati, where the poet Giacomo Leopardi was born. The city was filled with inscriptions on the walls of houses, made up of his verses. Walking through it was literally a journey through his poetry.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I believe I am a teacher who is very attentive to the needs of my students. Helping them achieve their goals motivates me to improve my teaching techniques. I always seek a genuine and real connection with my students, which is why I love teaching-because, in turn, I receive a lot from them.
