About TC
Language has fascinated me all my life. I grew up in a bilingual (Spanish and English) community and later studied Japanese. I was also fascinated by social science and humanities subjects, so I studied Politics, Psychology & Sociology at the University of Cambridge before refocusing on my passion for linguistics. I believe that caring for your mental well-being is essential for effective learning. I began tutoring while still at university, helping fellow students prepare for exams by finding the study techniques that worked best for them and avoided unnecessary stress. Afterwards, I worked for several years as a private tutor and as a cover teacher for GCSE and A-level before I returned to academia at the University of Glasgow. Here in Glasgow, I completed a Joint Honours MA in English Language & Linguistics and Theology & Religious Studies, writing my dissertation on Hebrew manuscripts in medieval England. I discovered a particular passion for phonetics (how the body produces speech sounds) and historical linguistics. In addition to tutoring, I'm interested in using my phonetics training to become a dialect coach. In my spare time I enjoy writing fiction and nonfiction.

Are you interested in the mechanics of language? Work with a University of Glasgow graduate in English Language & Linguistics to explore your interests and meet your personal goals. Whether you're considering applying for a Linguistics course, currently studying Linguistics and hoping to brush up, or just curious about the subject in general, I can help you. I have 5 years of experience as a tutor and cover teacher from secondary school to university level. Depending on your needs and preferences, lessons can be anything from 20-minute tasters to 90-minute study sessions. Examples of topics we can cover: • Etymology: the origin and history of words (note: this can help improve your spelling skills!) • History of the English language and its relationship to others • Understanding your own accent through phonetics (the science of speech sounds) and dialect studies • Getting to grips with the International Phonetic Alphabet • Introduction to sociolinguistics: how social factors, such as prejudice and prestige, affect language • Onomastics: the study of names • Palaeography: deciphering historical handwriting styles • How to find reliable sources and avoid misinformation My approach is based on understanding your individual needs and learning style, and if you're preparing for an exam or other assessment, I can help you develop study skills grounded in my previous background in psychology. My techniques focus on building your confidence in your own abilities and minimising stress while you learn. If you've grown accustomed to using generative AI when writing or searching for information, I can help you build confidence in your own writing abilities and learn how to conduct effective web searches without falling into the trap of AI misinformation. I do not use generative AI in my work. If you enjoy working with me and want to explore another subject together, I also have experience teaching Psychology, Sociology, History, Religious Studies, and revision skills for subjects like Biology and English.
