About Mary Ann
I have lived and worked in the UAE for the last 30 years, dedicating my career to helping students develop strong reading, literacy, and research skills. With over two decades of experience in Higher Education libraries and ESL teaching, I have guided countless students in reading for pleasure, thinking critically, and making informed decisions—skills that empower them for life. Beyond the classroom, I keep learning fun and engaging. I play Pokémon Go, listen to funny podcasts, talk to Siri, and even argue with ChatGPT! My goal is to create a supportive, interactive learning environment where students feel confident, curious, and capable of success.

Learning together is a two-way commitment. I prepare materials that learners can work on with my guidance and then independently, ensuring they build confidence and critical thinking skills. Our lessons will be structured as 30 minutes of learning by doing (interactive instruction, discussions, and guided exercises) and 30 minutes of doing and learning (practical application, problem-solving, and feedback).
Typical Length of a Lesson
Each session lasts 1 hour, with a balance of guided learning and independent practice.
Your Qualifications/Experience as a Tutor
I hold a degree in Linguistics and a CELTA certification, with over 20 years of experience teaching reading, literacy, and English as a Second Language (ESL) to students of all levels. I have extensive experience teaching English spelling, grammar, reading skills, writing research papers, and helping with homework. Additionally, I have guided students in finding credible research sources, using Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, and developing academic and professional skills.
