About Emily

I started learning the piano with my grandmother from a young age. I worked through the grades (achieving the ABRSM-dip and LRSM diplomas) and had experience playing in ensembles, concertos and duets. I particularly love the romantic and impressionist eras of music, with some of my favourite pianists including Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Ravel.

Alongside my work as an NHS doctor, music has always been an essential part of my life — a space to restore balance and reconnect with creativity. For me, I see music as something powerful and lifelong — not just exam-focused, but meaningful, enjoyable, and enriching. I love helping students experience music as a source of confidence, creativity, and joy, alongside steady and supportive musical progress.

After taking maternity leave, I am so pleased to be returning to teaching on a part-time basis. I’m excited to welcome students into a supportive and encouraging environment to work towards your goals!

About the lesson

My lessons are calm, encouraging, and tailored to each individual student. I adapt my approach to suit each student’s pace, goals, and learning style, whether that’s building confidence, preparing for exams, or simply enjoying music.

During our lessons we will focus on:

- Strong foundations in technique
- Reading music with confidence
- Developing musicality and expression from an early stage
- Making lessons enjoyable and motivating, especially for children

For exam students, I provide clear structure, goal-setting, and regular feedback. For beginners and hobby players, lessons are relaxed, positive, and focused on steady progress.

My background in medical education (PGCert) means I’m experienced in supporting learners, building confidence, and adapting when something isn’t clicking yet.

I teach:

- Children and adults
- Complete beginners to advanced students
- Students learning for enjoyment or working towards exams

I’m particularly experienced with:

- Young learners needing a patient, supportive teacher
- Adult beginners or returners who may feel nervous starting again
- Examination preparation

Typical lessons are:

- 30 minutes – ideal for younger children and beginners
- 45–60 minutes – suited to older children, teens, and adults or for examination preparation

Lesson length can be discussed and adjusted depending on age, level, and concentration.

I have known Emily since childhood and have always been involved in music with her. Emily is a wonderful pianist as a soloist but is just as talented as a teacher, accompanist and duet partner. Her Rachmaninov piano duets are rightfully renowned by all who have the pleasure of hearing them!
She is a patient and kind teacher who takes the time to understand whoever she is working with. She has such a technical knowledge that she can easily root out any issues you may be having and has a wealth of approaches to solve them. She always coaxes out the best in all her students and encourages them to excel, not just be adequate.
