About Adam
My name is Adam and I qualified as an actuary in 2011. I have over 18 years' experience working in the UK investment industry working for and with some of the biggest companies in the world. So... what is an actuary? Actuaries are problem solvers and strategic thinkers, who use their mathematical skills to help measure the probability and risk of future events. They use these skills to predict the financial impact of these events on a business and their clients. I am proud to say I am one of over 70,000 actuaries in the world. This sounds like a lot until you realise there are over 3,000,000 accountants (that is a little over 2 actuaries for every 100 accountants). What did I need to do to qualify for this role? The first step was to achieve a first class honours degree in Mathematics from the University of Manchester and then to snag a graduate role with one of the Big 4 accounting firms (no mean feat given that they only have less than one role for every 50 applicants). Next came a set of 15 gruelling professional exams which are considered to be some of the toughest exams to pass in the world. This challenge was least because they had to be completed around a demanding full-time professional job and needed over 3,000 hours of dedicated study. Why does this make me a good choice as a tutor for you? First I have both a deep theoretical grounding in maths, business and finance combined with over 18 years of practical experience. This means you will get the best of both worlds and I will be able to supplement learning materials with real-life examples. Second I have developed techniques which enabled me to pass all my actuarial exams on the first attempt. You can benefit from these concepts to convert the theory we learn together into real-life exam success. Thirdly, I have significant experience in mentoring, tutoring and training a wide range of students, colleagues and clients to understand complex topics. It is my job to make the complicated understandable!

This fact drives my approach as it proves that small improvements made steadily over time will yield big results even if you feel you are struggling at the start. My mission is to help you supercharge your learning and enjoyment of maths, statistics, business and finance. Throughout our time together you can expect clarity, connection, communication and a common objective. Before our lessons begin we will have a session so we both fully understand what you want to achieve and by when you want to achieve that objective. For example, you might want: - Help understanding a basic mathematical concept; - to get an A* in GCSE Maths; - to get an A* in A-level Maths / Further Maths - succeed in a university entrance exam; - to pass a specific university module; - to pass a professional exam. Before our lessons begin we will have a session to articulate exactly what you want to achieve and by when you want to achieve that objective. No matter the objective it will then be my mission to help you succeed. I will do this by developing a bespoke lesson plan which will be designed to maximise the chance of you achieving your personal goal. Lessons will typically be 1-hour and you should expect these sessions to be interactive. Each lesson will be supplemented with additional work you should complete to consolidate your studies.

Adam is an amazing tutor - he is highly skilled and insightful, and knows what he’s doing. Adam is very thorough and pays attention to detail, giving students the best possible chance they have, and is particularly good at making clear things that are implied and not explicitly stated in books and guidance. Adam’s helped me so much with interview skills training in the last year, and has broken down all the common things that come up, giving me formulae and techniques for every kind of question, and advice that I’ve not been able to find elsewhere such as how to make a strong impression to show off my strengths. His tailormade tuition has helped me maximise my potential. I’ll hopefully be able to get a job at a major firm now thanks to Adam.
