About Andres

I’m Andres, and I like a lesson to give you something you can notice for yourself. If I say a phrase sounds freer, I want us to know what made that happen. Was the bow moving more evenly? Did you leave enough room for the final note? Did your hand stop gripping during a change? We will choose one useful observation at a time. You should not have to monitor every part of your body while also trying to remember the music, particularly when holding the instrument still feels new.

When something goes wrong, I will ask what you heard before offering my explanation. Your answer may reveal that we are paying attention to different things: you are worried about the finger you missed, while I am hearing that the rhythm held together. Both observations matter. We can replay a small part, compare the results and decide what deserves attention next. If a verbal instruction remains unclear, I can demonstrate the contrast or reduce the task until the difference becomes audible. There is room to say, “I understand the words, but I cannot find that feeling yet.”

I want the amount of explanation to fit the person in front of me. A child may understand a bow change through a short imitation game; a teenager may want to hear how it changes the character of a favorite melody; an adult may prefer to work through the reason directly. If you already play at an advanced level, I will welcome your interpretation and help you test the choices behind it. If you are returning after a long break, we can rebuild without treating every forgotten detail as a failure. In each case, the aim is for you to become more able to hear, choose and adjust without waiting for someone else to tell you whether it was right.

A violin can give you several different answers to what feels like the same movement. One note rings, the next sounds thin, and trying harder does not necessarily help. In our lessons, we will make those changes easier to understand. You might play an open string with the bow travelling along one comfortable contact point, then compare a quicker stroke with a slower one while keeping the other details steady. Listening to what changes helps you connect a physical action with a sound you can recognize. If you are starting from scratch, that is already music: we can turn two contrasting sounds into a short question and answer before adding fingers.

When a tune loses its shape halfway through a phrase, we will look at where the bow is being spent. Perhaps you are using most of it on the first two notes and squeezing the rest into the remaining space. We can mark a few bow landmarks, choose where the phrase needs room, and test that plan at a comfortable speed. A beginner might use this to carry a simple melody without stopping between notes; a returning or intermediate player might use it to settle an uneven passage. With advanced repertoire, the same attention becomes more precise: changing bow distribution, contact point and speed to support a particular arrival, articulation or colour.

Pitch work has its own listening task. Instead of sliding a finger around until a note seems acceptable, we can hear the target first, place the finger, then compare the result with a stable reference such as an open string or a held accompanying note. That gives the hand a clear destination and the ear a useful question. Children might answer short musical echoes, teenagers might investigate a phrase from a piece they have chosen, and adults might work through a tune they want to play comfortably from beginning to end. You will leave with a manageable passage, a specific listening target and a way to judge the next attempt, so practice involves decisions rather than counting repetitions.
