About Duncan
I am a marine biologist with a PhD in zoology (all to do with parasites of salmon) and have spent the last 17 years working in the marine industry on the west coast of Scotland. For nearly 8 of the 17 years I lived and worked on the small island of Easdale, where I did some tutoring for island children who attended the high school in Oban. I tutored Nat 4 and Nat 5 level maths.
Over the last 17 years I have worked in various roles and co-founded three companies. With these companies I have developed and run tours and education sessions all about seaweed and marine ecology. As a consultant I have provided training services for carrying out seashore surveys.
More recently I have been a volunteer co-lead for our community marine biodiversity seashore surveys. I have experience of taking schools out onto the seashore and teaching marine biology and ecology across all age groups.
In the last company I co-founded, I helped support undergraduate students who worked placements in our company and therefore have experience of providing support and teaching at different education levels.
I have been encouraged by clients and friends that I should try tutoring and it is with this encouragement and love of sharing knowledge that I now offer my services.

I have provided tuition for National Level 5 maths in Scotland in person. I am experienced in talking about marine science and ecology. I tailor my teaching to match the student's needs and learning style. I aim for a relaxed, conversation-led style, to understand the student and what will work best for them. Every subject can be broad and I like to understand what the student feels they require and work through to what they then need. I actively work with the student going through questions and material to ensure comprehension. Once connected, I will be available for questions outside allotted time and like to provide support. The typical length of a lesson is one hour.
