About Victor

Hey there! I'm Victor Manuel Ruiz Vélez, a trumpet player from Colombia. I've been rocking the trumpet since the tender age of 8, and now at 26, I'm still loving every note. I'm a passionate musician and even pursued a bachelor's degree in trumpet performance. Teaching trumpet to all ages has been a fulfilling experience, and I've helped my students achieve some awesome musical milestones. When I'm not blowing my horn, you can find me gaming, savoring delicious food, and having a blast with my loved ones.

When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?
I started with this passion when I was 8 years old in my town's school of music, the love I felt for music was so high, so I decided to take that as my profession. The trumpet has been my loyal partner since day one and after my college life, I discovered my love for conducting and teaching, so I started a new adventure studying for my master's in wind band conducting at SIUE.
Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?
Although my musical life is centered on academic one, I enjoy Spanish Rock a lot and my favorite artist is Gustavo Cerati, is always a good choice when I'm stressed or need a good song to relax.
Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.
Teaching music history is amazing and interesting but I think it could be challenging because is a course likely to bore people, so find a way to get the student engaged could be so interesting and different.
What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?
This is a recurrent question and the answer is the same: every instrument has its challenges and say that one is harder than another is a subjective thing. Each instrument has different technical issues to deal with and the only thing I'm sure is if you want to master one, you will need to spend hours and hours on it.
What are your keys to success?
Being a good person, responsible, disciplined, passionate, and honest are the keys to success for me.
Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.
It would be awesome to meet musicians like Gustavo Cerati, Wynton Marsalis and Gustav Mahler. Those three guys could represent what I love about music, the first one representing the love I have for Rock, my first years when I used to play in a rock band, my youth, and hope. The second one represents the love I have for trumpet, a guy that is capable of playing classical and alternative music. The third one represents my love for composing and conducting, being one of the most important musicians in our history.
Sharing a beer with those guys would be clearly something unbelievable.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.
When I was in high school my teacher invited me to go to a music camp with young musicians from the whole department (something similar to a state in the US), once there I had one of the best experiences of my life, I learned a lot, opened my eyes to different ways to make music and the most important thing: I earned friends that I still have until today, one of the best gifts music has given to me.
What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?
I'm a Superprof because I really care about my students, I like helping them to grow and reach their goals, and for that reason, I will find a way to help and will do my best to reach it.
