About Desmond
With 6 years of experience teaching French, I bring energy, patience, and cultural richness to every session. My own love for French began while studying abroad in francophone Europe and deepened through years of travel, study, and immersive language programmes. I’ve worked with children learning their first foreign language, adults preparing for immigration, and professionals needing French for business or academic purposes. What sets my teaching apart is its conversational foundation. I believe that language is first and foremost a tool for connection. That’s why I help students develop usable French from the beginning. My sessions are active and interactive—no passive lectures or excessive memorisation. I believe in “learning by doing”—which means speaking, listening, and thinking in French from day one. My students consistently report improved confidence and fluency—whether they're planning a trip to Paris or simply want to engage with a new culture. Lessons begin with phonetics training and gradually build grammar through storytelling, role-plays, and visual aids. In intermediate phases, we tackle more complex grammar topics—tenses, gender agreements, and sentence structures—always applied to useful scenarios like travelling, working, or making friends abroad. Listening practice is prioritised using natural-paced French dialogues and audio from native speakers. Students write short journal entries, translate phrases, and engage in mini-debates, which solidifies comprehension and usage. We incorporate songs, film scenes, and news clips from French-speaking countries to deepen cultural understanding while enhancing fluency. For advanced learners, the focus shifts to refining fluency and expanding vocabulary through reading, writing, and conversation. We discuss current events, literature, and cultural practices, helping students understand not only the language but the worldview behind it. Assignments include opinion writing, complex dialogues, and short presentations—all done in French. The goal is to make you feel comfortable expressing yourself with nuance and confidence in any French-speaking environment.
