About Ryoko

Hi!! I'm Ryoko. I'm interested in providing tutoring in school math, competition math, college prep, and essay writing.

I'm a third-year Math PhD student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where I'm a teaching assistant. I've been teaching competition math at summer camps for over 5 years, giving me the opportunity to hone my own teaching styles and see what works when it comes to improving problem solving skills, and putting insights together into something that not only illuminates, but inspires!

As a former math competitor* and writer for the MATHCOUNTS competition series, I approach problem solving from the perspective of solving a puzzle or a riddle, not just memorizing formulas but using the basic ideas behind them to think about real-world problems creatively.

I'm also the author of a memoir series! Feel free to ask for more details! :D

I prefer a personalized approach tailored to each student, with a focus on learning more versatile problem solving skills and techniques, rather than a more standard "teaching to the test" approach. My problems that I give as exercises emphasize creativity and putting what you've learned together into applied knowledge that is highly useful in career and college prep!

In a lesson from me, we might go over more general areas in which you'd like to get an unshakable grasp on the fundamental concepts, try representative practice problems to gauge how you think about and approach various types of problems, how you discuss and communicate your ideas, and work on those aspects together more broadly to be able to solve not just one specific type of problem, but to be able to think on the fly and assemble new ideas and insights!

My instruction would likely be most suitable for high school and advanced middle school students, particularly those either preparing for college/college admissions and/or those with prior experience in essay writing and communicating ideas to an audience -- whether in the context of English class, math class with a proof, or even science or history. For this reason, I also dabble in essay writing and college admissions/standardized prep tutoring if the opportunity arises (perfect math and essay scores on SAT, ACT, and GRE exams).

At the same time, I'm a big fan of getting to know you on a personal level and making sure this is all right for you. We'll spend some time making sure the plan is both challenging and fun, and adjust dynamically at any time if needed. My style is all about building confidence and eagerness to tackle any problem out there -- and don't worry! I'll be more than happy to take it at your own pace and really enjoy the material together.

If you're looking to solve a wide variety of different problems, going beyond the school curriculum to prepare for college and the real world, and you're a fan of tackling challenges like a puzzle, my tutoring style might be a great fit for you!
