About Sheena
I have 10+ years experience teaching in a variety of public school settings, including being a high school math teacher and virtually supporting homeschool students through my work as a teacher with a homeschool charter school. In addition, I have 6 years experience homeschooling my own children and I have 20 years experience tutoring math students from TK - High School.
Fear and resistance to mathematics seems to be very common. I believe this often happens because students are forced to move on with the class and miss important building blocks along the way. I wanted to become an educator so that I could identify those gaps, help students master them and rebuild their confidence and love for mathematics.

I am passionate about mathematics and I believe that mathematics is truly fun! I believe in promoting student-led a-ha moments that create deep and lasting learning. Playing games together and promoting student-led discussions are my favorite ways to keep a virtual math session fun and engaging. I want my students to have an active role in our session where they feel valued and connected. My primary goal is to make connections with my students. Each student must feel safe, seen and connected in order to be in a place of learning. This means that I do my best to notice when a student is blocked or distracted and I reach out to connect before moving on. I believe the key to mathematical success is to NOT focus on memorization or perfection, but instead focus on the process of learning.
My students have two options when they choose to work with me. They may choose the typical 1:1 virtual tutoring session where we dive deep into specific topics or they may choose my unique text tutoring option that allows students to text unlimited questions during specified office hours, 5 days a week, in order to receive real time math during their assignments.
