About Brendon

I’m a PhD student at the University of Toronto, mainly studying Probability. I graduated from Marianopolis College with A+’s (above 90%) in Calculus 1, 2 & 3 and Linear Algebra 1 & 2. I graduated from Concordia University with an Honours BA in Pure & Applied Mathematics. I have been tutoring in Linear Algebra and Calculus since 2014. I have also tutored in high-school level Mathematics such as Sec4/grade10, Sec5/grade11, and grade 12 Mathematics. I have recently completed my curriculum of Mathematics courses at Concordia University (Montreal) and I would love to share my knowledge in tougher higher-level Mathematics. I can offer help in: Math with Computer Algebra (MAST 232) Advanced Calculus 1 (MATH 264) Advanced Calculus 2 (MATH 265) Linear Algebra 1 (MATH 251) Linear Algebra 2 (MATH 252) Probability 1 (STAT 249) Probability 2 (STAT 250) Ordinary Differential Equations (MATH 370) Numerical Analysis (MATH 354) Combinatorics (MATH 339) Elementary Number Theory (MATH 392) Analysis 1 (MATH 364) Analysis 2 (MATH 365) Real Analysis (MATH 464) Operations Research (MATH 361) Complex Analysis 1 (MATH 366) Measure Theory (MATH 467) Abstract Algebra 1 (MATH 369) Abstract Algebra 2 (MATH 470) Introduction to Microeconomics (ECON 201) Introduction to Macroeconomics (ECON 203) Object Oriented Programming 1 (COMP 248) Personal Finance (FINA 200)

I have a very gentle and patient approach to teaching Mathematics as I believe everyone is capable of understanding any math concept, easy or difficult. I try to provide different angles on a subject or concept to try to find the best and easiest way for my students to grasp the material at hand, in a way that's most comfortable for them. I also take my time and review the material that my student might be uncertain of, making sure they understand it. When I personally study I’m very detailed in my approach and that has lent to me being able to look further and help many students on their journey through the material as I’ve already traveled the path and can give tips on what to avoid and what’s the right direction.

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

The first time I realized I wanted to be a mathematician or physicist I was probably 5 years old, my grandfather had told me I would someday be able to use mathematics to understand the world and I was hooked. I wanted to know more, but I was too young and that dream got shelved until I came back to it years later when I was 14 years old. I forgot about wanting to know more about mathematics, but it was always in the back of my mind, and in junior high school I would never study for my math courses while maintaining an 85% average, until I got to high school. My antics didn't work anymore, I couldn't study for my math courses and I almost failed. My grandfather who saw my grades decided to tutor me, and we would spend every night working out math problems I was really hooked this time. The more problems you solve, the easier problem-solving begins to feel. I've been constantly chasing learning newer ideas, ways to look at problems, and finding the solutions to harder and harder problems. Progress is fun, it's addictive.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

I'm eager to learn new ideas, and mathematics always has something new to offer or learn. Mathematics is a playground.
  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

Tutoring is very fulfilling because when I first started learning higher-level mathematics I didn't believe that someone like me should be learning such things, I don't come from a particularly special background or neighbourhood, and I didn't go to the best science high school, none of my friends were interested in mathematics. It was just me, the only thing I had was something driving me forward to know more, to try my best to master things as much as possible, and to my surprise, the more I dedicated myself to chewing through those tough ideas, the better I got, and I'm surprised every day that I'm even able to do higher level mathematics. I was always "smart," but I didn't show any exceptional mathematical ability as a kid, I never knew I was *this* smart though. So I want to share this feeling with other people, if I was a "regular" guy and graduated with the grades I graduated with, why can't anyone else? Maybe I can make it more efficient for others to understand tough material easier and suffer less, and perhaps it will make it more fun for them. They'll see mathematics from my perspective, as fun. Essentially I try to be a really good salesman, when everyone else tried to sell you mathematics and failed, I'm presenting you with a good sales pitch. Whatever aspect you don't like about mathematics, maybe it's because math tests come with time limits, okay. What if you had all the time in the world? Now that you're relaxed and can do your math problem in peace, would you like to solve the problem now? You may be feeling your professor doesn't support you or the class enough. What if I babysat you every step of the way and check to see if you understand? I do everything I can to lower the mental barrier that people think they have with mathematics. When I tutor someone regularly and they tell me they didn't like mathematics at first, and now really enjoy it, and then they tell me they passed their course with the grade they wanted, I've had students that told me they failed the course previously, and then passed it with a 93%, the highest course they've ever had in a mathematics course ever. it feels fulfilling because that was my plan and I accomplished it, sharing this feeling and sharing the knowledge.
  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

I'm probably am very influenced by the support my grandfather offered me when we first started doing math problems every night back in high school.
  • What are your keys to success?

Hard work and dedication, there are no secrets to success, just what you decide to do when you already know what it takes to be successful but don't want to hear or accept it aha.
