About Salif
I have many years' experience as a Mathematics teacher and Head of Mathematics Faculty in various schools in West and North London. I joined the profession to help students and their families. I took up private tuition in order to continue to share my passion for the subject. Hence, I enjoy helping teenagers and adults to reach their potential. I am approachable, flexible and enthusiastic. I pride myself in my patience, thoroughness and motivational skills.
I have the following qualifications; BSc(Hons) in Mathematics, MSc in Numerical Analysis and PGCE(Secondary Mathematics). I have worked in various schools in London since 1996 teaching from Years 7 to GCSE and A levels. I am also an examiner in Mathematics for GCSE with one of the major exam boards. I have done one-to-one tutoring for 10+ years.
I have worked with a large variety of students, from school year 7 to A Level Mathematics, with a range of ability levels. Many students have shown outstanding improvements in attainment, for example, in 2015 one student who started working with me in January at grade C at a comprehensive school ended up with a final GCSE grade A* and her improved level of confidence was reflected in other subject areas.
Many other students I have tutored have moved up by at least one set. For younger students, my teaching style consists of three fundamental elements: cementing school curriculum knowledge by giving an in depth understanding of the material, enriching knowledge by exploring theory beyond the curriculum, and thirdly, promoting an intellectual curiosity and love of mathematics via the exploration of interesting mathematical problems. I also have experience working with lower ability students, for example, maintaining a regular focus on core numeracy skills and mental arithmetic strategies whilst helping them build and enhance their confidence with the more abstract areas of Mathematics. During my career I have worked with students from a wide range of cultures and at least 30 different nationalities.

The first few lessons are about getting to know the type of learner the student is. I also ascertain what aspects of the subject and level of support required by the student. I plan each lesson thoroughly, taking into consideration what works well for the student. Mathematics is a challenging subject for most students so I do my best to have relaxed lessons where the student does not feel intimidated and can ask questions freely in order to clarify and deepen their understanding. I exercise a great deal of patience as well. Excellent working relationships are also crucial! Most often I offer at least two methods of explaining a concept to give the student a choice.
