About Nony

I am an Accounting and Finance Graduate (upper class) with a Masters in Business Analysis and Consultancy. Having tutored maths for more than 5 years during and after my higher education, I have become passionate about making maths one less problem in children's lives. I used to tutor at a tuition centre with groups of 4 to 5 students until I noted that students significantly improved when they didn't have an audience. I therefore set out to provide individual tuition to develop confidence and improve grades.

I have tutored in SATs, 11+ maths preperation and GCSE Maths.
I am well experienced in homework help and topic target practice to get back on track at school or ahead.

Hello there, my name is Nony and I am here to provide straightforward, enjoyable maths lessons for primary school children as of Year 4 upwards to Year 11. I am here to help those struggling with certain maths topics, those preparing for SATs and/or 11+ and GCSE.
***Group bookings available with discounts. Maximum Group of 3 students***

Check out Sample lesson and more Info on my Facebook page: Nony's Maths @nonysmaths or I am happy to email them to you.

SATs:
By the end of Year 6, children will be tested on everything they have learnt so far from Year 4. It's therefore important to consolidate all Key Stage Two maths topics and basic maths operations to succeed.

11+
I help with those writing GL and/or CEM exam boards. The more difficult and competitive tests will stretch the child beyond KS2 or SATs work. Starting as early as Year 4, will benefit your child significantly.

Depending on the level the student is based on the Position Analysis Test, they may start lower down the road. The following is an overview of how my lessons/ program goes:

1. Get to know each other consultation (over phone, in person, or webcam)

2. Free Demo (optional)

2. SATs or 11+ Position Analysis Assessment (realistic paper from exam board resources) OR GCSE mock assessment

3. Target Practice weak Topics (those not preparing for exams and/or already know their weaknesses based on an already done assessment, would start here)

4. Topic mini tests

6. Un-timed Assessment papers

7. Timed Assessment papers (Especially toward exam time)

Why Online?

1. The resources available online keep students engaged such as educational videos, illustrations and quest games. These broaden the student’s minds and can discover various ways to solve a problem.

2. Convenience and flexibility. No need to face extra traffic for lessons after school and also no need to prepare your home for the arrival of a tutor.

3.The student can do their lessons any time and anywhere with a good WiFi Connection. Whether in their study, or whilst travelling on holiday, you don’t have to shift your normal routine.

4. The student will be in a familiar environment which they are comfortable in. They can focus without distractions or other students.

5.With my online tutoring, 1 hour lessons are really 1 hour lessons. No extra times and costs for travelling.

6. Using Zoom Online is free. Download for free and the moment you book a lesson, you are automatically booked on Zoom.

My Insights as a Trained and Experienced Tutor:

In my years of tutoring, I have noted a lot about students and the subject. The main common issues to look out for with confident children in maths are:
- misunderstanding the written question; the arithmetic is usually very simple but this commonly happens when students are going too fast at the expense of accuracy. This is usually developed over time through peer pressure as an attempt to be on top in class.
- Overuse of shortcuts during mental arithmetic shown by lack of working out; this causes a number of issues when it comes to showing or explaining logic in story sums.
- Exam technique in terms of trying solve the hardest questions and losing time to focus on strengths.

With less confident students:
-The main issue is lack of confidence and fear stemming from shaky foundations of basic times tables.
- Many times you can recognize pupils who despise maths based on their disorganized work, books etc with no pride in their work. They usually have given up understanding the story and just want to get on with it.
-Misunderstanding the written question and linking them to the operations for solution. I aim to make students comprehend a problem sum and explain the logic first before identifying the operations they can use to solve it.
-Afraid to ask questions out of fear of ridicule or dismissal
-lack of exam technique ie time pressures

I provide a safe, comfortable environment for the student to focus and ask questions without judgement. I aim to encourage students on organized work which usually happens when they now understand what they are doing. I provide various ways in solving problems and they use what they understand easiest. My lessons are personalized and structured to target weak areas and improve performance.

The overall aim of my lessons is to make students more independent and confident in the subject.

Timescales:
With less confident students it takes longer to establish smooth lessons and see results. Cramming is counter productive in this case. As an example, 6 months of 1 hour lessons per week is better than 2 months of 4 sessions per week. Consistency over a long time produces sustainable results. Even for the confident students, I advise a maximum of 2 hours (on different days) per week or less.

How Long are lessons?
In my experience children lose concentration after 30 minutes of teaching, so I teach for the first 25 to 30 minutes whilst the last half hour they apply what they have learnt as an enjoyable game and I explain the homework. Based on experience 2 hours of continuous Maths can be unhelpful and can make it seem like a chore to children. With GCSE students, as they are older, they can concentrate for longer if need be.

I don't aim to overload students with tuition homework given their school work, sports and other activities. The homework I give should take 15 to 25 minutes maximum to complete and cement the concept. Sometimes it may just be 5min quizzes that can be done online.

During school term, a lesson after school is beneficial on a day where there is not a lot of sport or activities if this is possible. I also provide holiday lessons.

How are lessons done online?
Using Zoom online which is free. Download for free and the moment you book I send you the invitation to start at the click of a button. (booking page available after initial contact)
