About Andrew

I’m originally from Newcastle upon Tyne and have spent the last four years studying Mathematics at the University of Manchester, where I recently graduated with a First Class degree.

I’ve always had a real passion for Maths, having achieved a Grade 9 at GCSE and an A* at A-Level. I love helping others see the subject in a more approachable and enjoyable way.

My goal as a tutor is to make Maths feel less intimidating and more intuitive, helping students build confidence as well as strong problem-solving skills. Whether you’re preparing for exams or just want to strengthen your understanding, I’ll tailor lessons to suit your needs and learning style.

I offer Maths tutoring for all levels up to and including A-Level (or equivalent). Any topic from the syllabus can be covered, depending on what you’d like to focus on.

My lessons are fully personalised to each student. The first few sessions are used to get to know how you learn best, identify your strengths and areas for improvement, and set clear goals. From there, I create targeted materials and use teaching methods designed to help you make the fastest and most effective progress possible.

Whether you’re aiming to boost your grades, prepare for exams, or simply build confidence in Maths, my lessons are structured to make every session engaging, productive, and tailored to your needs.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

From an early age, I have always had a strong interest in Maths. I am particularly drawn to how logical it is. There is almost always a correct answer or, at the very least, a clear and logical explanation and this really appealed to me. This interest developed throughout school, where I achieved a 9 at GCSE, an A* at A level, and later a First-Class honours degree in Mathematics at university.

Alongside my studies, I began by tutoring family and friends. Helping others understand concepts they previously found challenging on was incredibly rewarding and enjoyable for me. It highlighted to me how important it is to pass on my knowledge in fun and accessible ways. This experience sparked my passion for private tutoring and confirmed that teaching mathematics is something I genuinely love doing.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach and the topics you enjoy discussing with students.

I teach Maths and I particularly enjoy teaching the pure side of the subject, although I also enjoy mechanics. One of my favourite topics to teach is differentiation, as it brings together so much prior knowledge and I love how versatile and applicable this topic is to other areas of Maths.

I thoroughly enjoy seeing that moment where everything “clicks” in their head. Seeing their confidence grow as they realise, they understand something they once found intimidating is one of the most rewarding parts of tutoring.
  • Did you have any role models or teachers who inspired you?

I can’t point to one specific teacher, but I was very fortunate to have such good maths teachers throughout my education. I still remember most of them by name and I could easily talk positively about each of them. Looking back now, I find it admirable how effortlessly they made such complex topics seem. Teaching mathematics in a clear and simple way is a real skill, and it’s something I aspire to do for my own students, helping them see that maths doesn’t have to be scary or overwhelming.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

For me, patience and understanding are two of the most important qualities a tutor can have, and they are qualities I really pride myself on. Mathematics can be challenging, and students need to feel comfortable enough in their teacher and environment to ask questions and make mistakes without the fear of judgement.

Creativity is also an essential. Everyone learns differently, and being able to adapt explanations and find engaging, enjoyable ways to approach a topic makes a huge difference to how students respond and progress.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

One thing that has always stayed with me is how often topics that initially felt impossible became so much more enjoyable and rewarding once it was explained in the right way. I remember countless times I struggled within certain topics until someone took the time to break them down logically and relate them to ideas I already understood.

These experiences helped shape the way I tutor now. I always try to find the explanation that works for that student. I’ve seen first-hand how transformative the right approach can be, not just for grades, but for confidence as well.
  • What difficulties or challenges have you faced in your subject?

I have always found statistics more challenging, and this is one of the reasons I gravitated towards pure mathematics and mechanics. In my case, this meant I had to spend extra time revising and revisiting content from statistics and I was forced to find interesting and enjoyable ways of understanding the key concepts. Through practice and understanding, I came to appreciate and enjoy statistics.

Another challenge for me was figuring out how to revise effectively. As I progressed from A levels to university, I had to adapt my study techniques and find what worked best for me. This has been invaluable for me as a tutor. I understand that there is no single “correct” way to learn. I would love to help students find revision and learning methods that suit them personally and allow them to truly excel.
  • Do you have a particular passion?

Mathematics is definitely one of my passions. I have always loved the subject, and even at university it felt far less like work than people might expect. The content was stimulating, creative, and deeply satisfying, especially during my final year, where my research project allowed for a lot of independent thinking.

I also have a genuine passion for tutoring. I enjoy revisiting material from different levels and helping students see mathematics in a way that makes sense to them and builds their confidence.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

What truly makes me a Superprof is that I genuinely care about the students I tutor. I want them to succeed, not just academically, but in how they feel about mathematics as a subject.

I am patient, supportive, and committed to creating lessons that are effective while remaining light, engaging, and enjoyable. I believe that when students feel comfortable and supported, they are capable of achieving far more than they expect, and I love being part of that journey.
