About Karen
I am an experienced medical doctor and a Cambridge University certified English language teacher (CELTA). I worked as a doctor for 18 years in Australia and New Zealand, during which time I also taught and mentored adults and children in a variety of contexts. I also spent some time in England and Hong Kong. I have online teaching experience with individuals and small groups. I am a native English speaker. I grew up, studied and worked in an English-speaking country. I can speak Cantonese but only for basic conversations.
I specialise in: Medical English, conversational English, development of listening, reading, speaking and writing skills, academic writing and reading, clarification of grammar and pronunciation.
My interests include travel, learning about different cultures, animals and wildlife, cooking, baking, sewing, art and craft, parenting, mentoring and student well-being. You have a wide range of topics to choose from for our lessons and conversations!

My teaching methodology is learner-centred, interactive and engaging. The focus is on the student. The first lesson involves identifying your needs, interests and goals, determining your English proficiency, and discussing a plan of action to help you achieve your goals. All lessons are tailored to your specific needs. If your goal is to improve speaking skills, group lessons with friends are encouraged as they offer more role-playing options, although one-on-one lessons also work well. My lessons use a variety of multi-media including video clips, audio recordings, slide shows, authentic material and some coursebooks. A typical lesson would include some speaking practice, language focus points, quizzes and writing practice, depending on the topic and the length of your lesson.
My lessons range from 30 to 60-minutes, depending on your preferences, but I recommend 60-minute lessons for optimal learning. Lessons are online via Webcam (Zoom). The Zoom platform is really easy to use and you do not need an account. A link will be sent to you. All you need is a computer or laptop with a camera (ideal) and access to the internet. Otherwise, a phone or tablet would also work. Material for lessons can be downloaded via the platform.
