About Abi
I’m currently working in the NHS but I’ve previously worked in further education, inclusion, science outreach, refugee education and as a private tutor.
I have an MSc in Cancer Research and Molecular Biomedicine with Distinction and a BSc in Biomedical Science (1.1) from Manchester and Warwick uni respectively.
Despite what those grades look like, I found school, uni and just studying in general really hard work. I completely get what it’s like to be struggling in a subject and feeling confused or behind. I will never make you feel silly for not knowing something or asking a question - my goal will always be to build your confidence alongside building your knowledge.

When you’re prepping for exams or coursework, it can feel super overwhelming and like you don’t know where to start. Half of the battle with study is getting organised and getting started. So before we work together, we can work out where your knowledge gaps are and what concepts you’re finding most challenging. Then we can make a plan of action to tackle it together! I’m completely flexible - we can do just a couple of sessions on a specific topic when you need to or regular sessions to cover your syllabus in depth. I’d normally have sessions that are 60 minutes max as it becomes difficult for students to concentrate after that but I’m happy to go with to whatever suits you best.
I think Biology is easier to learn when students can engage with the content rather than simply listening to a lecture or reading information. So I keep my sessions interactive and actively encourage my students to chat about what we’re learning.
A typical lesson would be going through the content - paying extra attention to any concepts which are more complex. I tend to explain concepts visually with lots of colours, pictures and diagrams but we can adapt this based on how you learn best. I would typically go through some exam/essay questions together, eventually building your confidence up until you are able to complete these independently. Repetition is key to transferring information from your short term to your long term memory so in every session we can do some recapping on what you have learned previously.
One student I tutored in GCSE Biology went from a grade 4 to a grade 9 within a year and I’ve also helped students who were failing their courses to get those pass marks. I’ve got 3 years of experience working in education with a wide range of ages and abilities. I also have experience of working with students with learning difficulties and disabilities so please do make me aware of any anything I can do to make our sessions more accessible to you. I will always be happy to adapt our sessions so that you can learn in a way that suits you.
Everyone’s brains work differently but often our schools and universities teach every student in the same way. I truly believe that there is nothing in Biology that you can’t understand, it just needs to be explained in a way that makes sense to you.
