1.Teaching Method and Techniques
My teaching method is centered around creating an inclusive, hands-on learning environment where students of all backgrounds and skill levels can thrive. I combine my deep knowledge of music theory, composition, and performance with a flexible approach that adapts to each student's individual needs. I prioritize a balance of technical proficiency and creative exploration. Whether working with beginners or advanced students, I emphasize the practical application of concepts, often guiding students to understand music theory through the context of playing their instruments or composing. Additionally, I value collaborative learning and foster an environment that encourages students to express themselves musically and explore their creativity.
2. A Typical Lesson Plan
A typical lesson begins with a warm-up exercise designed to target specific areas of improvement—whether that’s technical skills, sight-reading, or rhythmic precision. Following the warm-up, we move on to the main focus of the lesson, which could be learning a new song, mastering a musical technique, or studying a theory or composition concept. For example, I may introduce a new piece of music and explore the theoretical elements behind it, encouraging the student to apply that theory in real time. Afterward, we have time for a brief performance or improvisation session to reinforce the learned material. Each lesson concludes with a review of progress, providing constructive feedback and setting goals for the next session, ensuring students are motivated to continue advancing.
3. As a tutor
What sets me apart as a tutor is my ability to blend theoretical knowledge with practical application, making learning both comprehensive and enjoyable. My extensive experience teaching at renowned universities and music schools in both Colombia and the United States allows me to bring a global perspective to my teaching, integrating diverse musical traditions and genres into my lessons. I’m particularly skilled in guiding students not just in technique but in discovering their unique musical voice, whether they are studying jazz, classical music, or contemporary genres. My background in composition, music production, and performance gives students the tools to apply their knowledge creatively, whether they want to compose, arrange, or simply enhance their technical skills.
4. Who the Lessons Are For
My lessons are suitable for students of all ages and skill levels. Whether you're a complete beginner looking to explore music for the first time, an intermediate student aiming to refine your technique, or an advanced musician seeking to deepen your understanding of music theory, composition, or performance, I tailor each lesson to meet your goals. I work with students of all backgrounds, whether they are pursuing formal degrees in music, preparing for professional careers, or simply looking to enhance their personal musical journey. Additionally, I offer specialized instruction in music production and jazz performance, allowing for a versatile and adaptive curriculum that caters to various musical interests and aspirations.
