About David

I graduated with a first-class Creative Music Production degree (BA) from The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London. I have been involved in music for over 15 years—first through playing guitar, and later through production, which has become my main focus.

My background is in rock and metal, although my tastes are broad. Much of my current listening and production work is electronic, ranging from leftfield pop to club music. I am always looking to innovate and experiment, and this naturally carries through into my lessons.

I work with beginners through to more experienced artists who want to develop their sound and finish their own music.

Alongside teaching, I run an educational music production YouTube channel with over 20,000 subscribers, where I share practical techniques and creative approaches to making music.

These days, I would describe myself more as a “computer musician.” However, I am also a proficient guitarist, bassist and drummer, with some ability on keys. My knowledge of digital audio and music theory is excellent, but I always keep lessons practical—so you leave each session having made real progress on your own music.

Some of my key strengths include composition and arrangement, drum programming, sound design and creative processing, as well as mixing and mastering—helping you turn ideas into full tracks, improve your arrangements, and develop a more distinctive sound. I also have a large collection of my own samples and presets, which students will have access to as part of the learning process.

I have several years of experience teaching both music production and DJing, using methods that are tried and tested. Lessons are tailored to you—whether you’re starting from scratch or already making music, we can work on your own tracks or focus on specific areas you want to improve.

I genuinely enjoy teaching—especially music production—and find it very rewarding to help students develop their sound and grow in confidence creatively.

Feel free to get in touch to discuss your goals—I’d be happy to help you move your music forward.

Find out more about David

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favourite instrument?

I started getting into music around age 14, having dabbled earlier on. I bought my (technically second) guitar at age 15 but didn't get into production until I was 19. I'm 30 now don't @ me.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

These days it's PC Music-adjacent stuff, Experimental Electronic and Hard Dance, but historically it's been Metal, Ambient, House and Techno, UK Garage and Grime.
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I think in terms of difficulty it's student dependent. I often encounter students - and this is generally more likely if they're self-taught - who are proficient in certain production techniques but are less competent in other areas, and often it's my job to redress that imbalance.

For me, I think unconventional and technology-assisted approaches to melody writing in electronic music are what I find most interesting right now.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

I'm probably not the right person to ask about this. I think they're all difficult in their own way. I could definitely make an argument a DAW is the hardest to master though.
  • What are your keys to success?

Probably mostly praxis, repetition and pushing yourself as an artist/producer. I'm still pretty dissatisfied with a lot of the stuff I make and I think that's a good thing.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Danny L Harle - Seems like a smart, nice guy, and also a great producer.

Arca - She's sick, has a really defined aesthetic and is really influential.

Bladee - Just be nice to hang with a like-minded individual.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

More of a tip I got from a teacher: don't always root your basslines in the tonic of a scale. It's a tip I've used a lot and I think varying your basslines is a very underrated production technique in general, particularly in electronic music.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I've been teaching for years and people can see my craft through my YouTube channel. I'm very good at creating work in the style of other artists and I think this is ideal for students because that's what most learners are initially aiming to do.
