  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I am a native German speaker who was born in Munich. I lived in Germany for 27 years before moving to England.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I personally like Albert Einstein, Christoph Watz and Hans Zimmer
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

The beauty of German is that it enables the speaker to express an idea in its deepest complexity with only one word. Other languages might need to use a whole sentence to express the same meaning.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

I have been brought up speaking German, my friends and family are native Germans and I went to School and University in Germany. Despite now living in England, I still speak German on a daily basis.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The most difficult parts of German are the articles and the case system. Many languages dont even have articles which is why it can take some some time to get used to the concept.

It is absolutely crucial to learn the base article (Der, Die, Das) of each word as if it is one and the same as the noun. The importance of doing this cannot be overstated because the problem of not doing so will only be compounded when that article begins to change when the case of the noun changes. Conversely, if you learn the base articles this way, then the entire case system will become exponentially easier.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

While at school I studied French and Latin for six years. However, since then I have forgotten almost everything.

There are several reasons why learning a language at school is less effective than other learning methods:

    - Students are passive participants
    - Languages are treated as a subject to study, not a skill to aquire
    - Students learn within a competitive (and uncooperative) environment
    - Students rarely use the language to communicate
    - Students are forced to use boring learning materials
    - Students spend little time with the language outside of class
    - Students are taught under pressure, just to receive a particular grade

After I met my native English speaking girlfriend, I realised how easy learning a language can actually be. Learning can be fun and feel very natural when actually using the language in daily life, and it is the fastest way to improve. I am trying to implement this in my lessons by having simple conversations early on.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

My mother language is High German but I have learned many german dialects by visting friends and relatives in nothern Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Due to speaking both German and English fluently I am able to properly communicate with my students, explain translations, and help with problem areas. I am proficient at German, which enables me to effectively teach students who require learning for school. However, as language is constantly evolving and specific words used in daily conversations are regularly changing, they cannot always be learned from a textbook. As I have lived in Germany almost all of my life, I am able to help my students speak German as if they were a native speaker (if that is their goal).
I am constantly switching between languages in daily life - English with my girlfriend and other people in the UK, and German during calls with my friends and family - so doing this with my students comes naturally to me. Furthermore, all of my family members are also teachers so I have been brought up with this skill.
I am very passionate at teaching German and I believe that I can offer interesting conversations, empathy towards my students and a fun time whilst learning.
