About Billy
I’m a professional visual artist with a deep grá for our teanga dúchasach.
I’ve taught Irish oral grinds for years, given tours of art galleries as Gaeilge, delivered Cruinniú na nÓg workshops and chaired arts festivals.
I’m the Communications Officer for Praxis, the artists’ workers’ union of Ireland, a role I ran for because of my deep respect for communication as a key element of what it means to be human.
I’m inclusive of all, no matter your background, ethnicity, culture or identity. I believe language is a pillar of culture and I know that culture can only be strengthened when it is shared and enjoyed.

I take a creative, holistic and personalised approach to teaching 1 to 1 classes with students. My lessons focus on speaking and reading Irish in preparation for oral and aural exams, although I can also offer advice on written Irish.
I've had great success in helping students to grow in confidence. One of my 2025 students, Julia, was considering ordinary level Irish. We discussed her views on it, discovering that confidence and relatability were her main sticking points. With my support, she went from H6 to H2 in a matter of weeks!
Irish is considered challenging mainly for its strict grammar and unique pronunciations. As a native speaker, I understand how to make sense of these aspects… and also how to gently bend the rules & play with vocab so that they work for rather than against each individual.
I use the curriculum as a foundation and build classes out from there, taking a lateral approach that enables students to develop strong, extra-curricular means of communication that organically encompass the exam materials and much more. We also look at TV, radio and new media in ways that feel natural and non-prescriptive.
