• Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

  My journey to acquiring fluency in Arabic was deeply rooted in my origins. Growing up in an Arabic-speaking environment, I was fortunate to be immersed in the language from a very young age. It was not just my immediate family who played a pivotal role in this process, but also my circle of friends and the vibrant surroundings of my community. Every interaction, every conversation, and every experience was an opportunity to refine and expand my understanding of Arabic. However, what truly set my passion for the language on fire was the guidance and inspiration I received from remarkable teachers. These educators, with their profound knowledge and infectious enthusiasm, opened doors to the rich tapestry of the Arabic language. They encouraged me to delve deeper, to explore the hidden gems, and to grasp the nuanced intricacies that make Arabic a truly captivating language. Through their mentorship, I gained not only linguistic proficiency but also a profound appreciation for the cultural and historical significance embedded within the language. My educational journey, rooted in my origins and nurtured by dedicated mentors, has not only allowed me to achieve fluency in Arabic but has also instilled in me a lifelong love for this remarkable language. • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

  In my opinion Fairuz is the embodiment of the Arabic language and culture due to her profound influence on the region's music and identity. Her music, characterized by poetic lyrics and a fusion of traditional and contemporary styles, captures the essence of Arab emotions, heritage, and unity. Fairuz's timeless appeal has transcended generations and borders, making her a beloved cultural icon throughout the Arab-speaking world. Her songs evoke a deep sense of nostalgia, love, and resilience, resonating with people from diverse backgrounds and preserving the essence of Arabic culture for decades. Her enduring presence and contribution to the Arab musical and cultural landscape solidify her status as an icon of the Arabic language and heritage. • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

  (As-salamu alaykum is a very special phrase in the Arabic culture and to me personally due to its multifaceted significance. Beyond being a common greeting, it embodies the core values of peace, respect, and goodwill, which are highly esteemed in Arab culture. Stemming from Islamic tradition, it carries both a religious and cultural weight, emphasizing the importance of spreading blessings and tranquility. This phrase transcends boundaries of age, gender, and social status, fostering inclusivity and unity among Arabic speakers. It symbolizes the shared cultural identity of Arabic-speaking people worldwide and serves as a warm and inviting gesture, reflecting the Arab world's deep-seated tradition of hospitality. Moreover, it facilitates interfaith and intercultural communication, highlighting its role in building bridges of understanding and harmony. Ultimately, "السلام عليكم" stands as a powerful representation of the cultural and spiritual values that define the Arabic-speaking community.

• Why does speaking this language matter to you?

  Speaking the Arabic language matters to me for a multitude of reasons that extend beyond mere communication. Firstly, it represents a profound connection to the rich and diverse culture of the Arab world. It allows me to delve into the history, traditions, and values of Arabic-speaking communities, providing me with a deeper appreciation for their art, literature, music, and way of life. This cultural immersion fosters empathy and a broader perspective, ultimately enriching my understanding of the global tapestry of human experiences.
  Moreover, speaking Arabic is a gateway to forging meaningful relationships with individuals who share this language. It opens doors to authentic interactions with friends, colleagues, and acquaintances, allowing for more profound connections and facilitating smoother communication. It's a tool for breaking down linguistic barriers and nurturing connections that transcend borders. Ultimately, speaking Arabic is a source of personal fulfillment and intellectual growth. Learning a new language is a journey of self-discovery that stimulates cognitive abilities, enhances problem-solving skills, and broadens horizons. It represents an ongoing commitment to expanding my knowledge and embracing the beauty of linguistic and cultural diversity. • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

  The primary challenge in learning the Arabic language lies in its intricate script and complex grammar. Arabic employs a script written from right to left, and its alphabet contains letters that change shape based on their position within words. The grammar includes intricate rules for verb conjugation, noun declension, and sentence structure. Furthermore, the presence of various regional dialects can add an extra layer of complexity. But I always remind my students that everything is as we perceive, if we perceive something as hard it will definitely seem hard, hence why we should always tackle our perceptions before anything else. One of the best methods to make learning this language easier is SRS (Spaced Repetition System) which is my personal favorite method while learning anything new. Moreover, stimulating our senses while learning is vital for learning so always try to listen to the language being spoken (songs, movies with captions, talking to a friend that speaks the language) and see how the language is written. These things as subtle as they are, can make a huge difference. Also you can never go wrong with flashcards!

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

  One of the most valuable experiences during my school days was assisting my classmates in learning the language. I recall a specific instance when a fellow student, struggling with the intricacies of Arabic grammar and pronunciation, approached me for help. It was then that I realized the importance of not only speaking a language but also being able to teach and convey its nuances effectively. Guiding my classmate through challenging aspects of Arabic language and seeing their gradual improvement was incredibly rewarding. This experience instilled in me a deeper appreciation for my native language and the satisfaction of aiding others in their language learning journeys. It reinforced the idea that language is a bridge that connects people and cultures, and being able to assist others in crossing that bridge can be as fulfilling as mastering the language itself.

• How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

  Travel has played a significant role in enhancing my skills and knowledge as a native speaker of Arabic. One specific trip that had a profound impact was my visit to Egypt. While I was already fluent in Arabic, this journey allowed me to immerse myself in a different Arabic dialect and regional culture. Interacting with locals in their daily lives, navigating through bustling markets, and engaging in conversations with Egyptians gave me a firsthand experience of Egyptian Arabic, which has its unique expressions and pronunciation. I found that exposure to a new dialect not only expanded my linguistic abilities but also deepened my understanding of the rich diversity within the Arabic language itself. It challenged me to adapt my communication style to better connect with people from different regions, fostering a sense of cultural empathy and flexibility in my language use. Additionally, being in Egypt allowed me to explore the country's rich history, literature, and contemporary issues in greater depth, providing a more holistic understanding of Arabic language and culture. Overall, this travel experience was a valuable addition to my linguistic journey, broadening my skills and enriching my appreciation for the Arabic language's complexity and cultural significance.
