About Mina

I have been a Farsi Teacher for 5 years and as a native Persian speaker I love our beautiful language, culture and traditions. My goal is not only to teach the language but to spread the word about Iran and so many amazing things including our food and music and give everyone a real taste of everything Persia. As someone who is married to a non-Iranian I have also come to realise how important it is for couples and in-laws to be able to communicate and build bridges between families. My teaching has allowed me to do this and it is incredibly satisfying for me and my students. If you have an Iranian partner and want to be able to know them better and talk to your in-laws I can help you If one of your parents is Iranian and you would like to connect with the culture and learn their mother tongue I can help you too If you've heard about Iran and want to visit there and get to know locals and get the most out of your experience Don't look further, because you are in the right place I've got you covered. Give it a try and send me a message. I can help you with everything related to the Persian language. I look forward to meeting you!!

I am really flexible and patient and I make sure to tailor my classes to the individual students and their personal interests. I prefer to teach each person according to their needs so the first question I will ask you is: Why do you want to learn Farsi? That’s how you will learn Farsi with me step by step and depending on your level! Beginners: I will help you to have basic conversations and make sentences. Intermediate: I will teach you more vocabulary and also make sure you have enough confidence to have a conversation. Advanced: I will teach you more slang and choose day to day subjects to talk about so you can be more aware of Iranian social media

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Im Iranian and a native persian speaker. Although I live in the UK now, I was born and raised in Iran. I am very passionate about our language as well as our culture and love sharing both of them with new people.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Persia is an ancient country and I have many people to choose from because we have a long history of singing, writing and poetry. If I had to choose just one person I would say Hafez because of the way he wrote the language in such a deep and meaningful way. Anytime you listen to his poetry whether you speak Persian or not you can feel his words not just hear them. I think he is a great symbol for our language.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

Iran has many traditions and maybe the one people may be familiar with is Taarof. We use Taarof as a means of etiquette whereby the meaning of the words being said doesn't reflect exactly what we want to say, the meaning is partially hidden in the background. For example if you take a Taxi, the Taxi driver will say "ghabel na dareh" which translates literally as 'your welcome' or in other words it was free, but of course we should pay. It is an indirect way of speaking that can drive foreigners mad because the process of offering and refusing payment can go on and on and on!!
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It's my mother tongue and I think it's a beautiful language. Many people have a bad image in their mind of Iran and many people have many misconceptions about Iranian people. I think teaching people the language and showing them my culture may start to dispel these myths and open people's minds. I have tried my best in the last years to teach a language as well as highlighting all of the good things about my culture. It might seem small but it matters a lot to me.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Where to start ;) only joking. Persian is a subdivision of the Indo-european languages and actually many words are similar to English such as Madar - Mother and Baradar - Brother, but of course many are different too. The main problem people have is the kh and gh sounds because you don't have these in your language and of course there is a new alphabet that goes from right to left. These may look daunting but actually are fairly easy to master
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

In the early days of my English language education I was learning very simple things like introductions and talking about my family. I had no confidence to speak but one day I met a foreigner in my city and my friends and I dared each other to talk to him. In the end I did it and I realised that knowing only a few words opened a whole new world and united people across borders. We didn't have a long conversation but I had such a wonderful feeling communicating with this new person that I was completely set on learning languages. I studied English at University, I took a teaching course and now I am teaching Persian. I know what a big difference it can make both large and small to people's lives.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Iran is a diverse country and I have travelled a lot around it. I have met lots of different people who although Iranian and speak Persian are all very different. I think I can incorporate all of these unique aspects into my language teaching, especially idioms and interesting cultural tidbits. I also know from having travelled with my Husband in Iran what is and what isn't important to learn at the beginning of a student's language journey. Many of my students have taken my classes before travelling to Iran and I am now very good at focussing our lessons on the core necessities which I think are different to things you would learn in other languages especially as I mentioned before understanding Taarof.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I have learned from many teachers in the past and I tried to learn and take the best bits from all of them whilst still maintaining my own teaching style. I have refined and continued to refine the process to be the best that I can be. Especially this has involved getting to know my students on a personal level so that I can tailor all of my classes to their needs and personal learning style. I am dedicated and passionate and believe strongly in what I am doing, I also create my own materials as I feel that many of the materials available are not of a high standard. In the end what is the best way to judge a teacher? It's by asking and judging their students. I think all of my reviews speak for themselves, my students love my lessons and have achieved or feel they are in the process of achieving their goals. It's what makes me a Superprof :D
