Mercedes is a super-caring native speaker Spanish teacher at a senior center in New York City. I have been in her class for a year and do not miss a session unless I am out of town. She is very patient and is aware of multiple methods to teach a subject and inspire us, including on-line websites as supplements. Once another student was asking why we couldn't go word-for-word from English to Spanish, as if every English word would have a counterpart in the Spanish translation. This went on for 5 minutes, then she asked a question showing she still didn't understand anything. Without realizing it, I banged my arm on the table. Mercedes calmly explained we all had to respect each other. We moved on and I get along fine with this other student.
Mercedes is a fine Spanish teacher. She also is fluent in English, and can explain the differences in meaning and usage in both languages.
