About Dissertation Tutor Nicole

- What kind of experience do you have? I have been a private tutor since 2010, and feel that I couldn't have a more rewarding career. The students who made me most proud were either on the cusp of having to repeat a year, or were considering dropping out of their courses because they were finding things so tough. One of those students went on to graduate with First Class Honours, and another one completed her course with a 2:1. In more recent years I worked with just one undergraduate student through an entire academic year (sometimes through two academic years). This was a wonderful way to tutor; having the time to build a rapport really gave me a deeper insight into the student's learning styles, and their anxieties about their work. My work with GCSE, A Level, and undergraduate degree students spans preparation for all exam boards, essay writing and dissertation tutoring across the arts, humanities, and health and social sciences. Every student has a different learning style; no two students are the same. I shape my personality and the way I teach around the learning style that works best for you. - Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate? My CRB has been renewed every two years since I first moved to the UK in 2003. - Where and with whom did you train? Undergraduate and postgraduate degrees: University College Dublin, BA; York University, MA; University of Newcastle, PhD. Adult Nursing: Northeastern Healthboard Training Hospital, Drogheda, Co. Louth, Ireland.

I have a warm, down-to-earth approach to teaching. One of my favourite aspects of being an English Literature tutor is guiding the student to trust their own ideas and views about the work. Those 'aha' moments when the student understands something elusive are a magical part of my job. Warmth and a sense of humour are an important aspect of how I teach. When I remember the most influential teachers in my life, these are the qualities that gave me an exceptional experience of learning from them. Through my experience as a tutor, I have found that a good rapport between student and teacher is a vital part of making learning enjoyable and accessible. - Which subject(s) do you teach? I teach: English Literature from Year 12 to degree level Health and Social Care for GCSE and A Level Nursing at degree level Dissertation support at degree level - Tell me about your qualifications: I qualified first as an adult nurse in Ireland, then transferred to working as a mental health nurse when I moved to the UK. There, I worked in acquired brain injury while also studying for my Masters Degree in English Literature. My qualifications in English range from 1st Class Honours for my Bachelors Degree, a Distinction for my Masters Degree, and highly commended PhD. (When wearing my other teaching hat, I also have several teaching diplomas in Ashtanga Yoga). My qualifications at a glance: PhD/ Doctorate Degree in English Literature (Newcastle University) MA in English Literature (University of York BA in English Literature and Language (1st Class Honours) (University College Durham) Registered General Nurse 1999 (Republic of Ireland) - How much do you charge? My fees range from £35 - £45 from A Level to undergraduate level. Travel is an additional £5 or £10 depending on whether you live inside or outside a four mile radius from my home. - Where do you teach? I teach in my own home or at the student's home, depending on what best suits your needs. Areas I cover include North Shields, South Shields, Tynemouth, and Whitley Bay. - When are you available? I am available mornings, afternoons and evenings from Monday to Friday. I may be able to provide online support on Saturdays. If your timetable changes from week to week I can work flexibly around that. Also, for my regular students, I'm always available on the other end of the phone if you are stressed during exam time or having difficulty with essay writing or dissertation writing. Sometimes you just need five minutes with me to get past a sticking point rather than having to wait until our next meeting. As a student, some of my best ideas used to pop into my head in the early hours of the morning, and some of the most difficult parts of my studies kept me up late at night. It would have helped me most during those times to be able to contact a tutor as soon as a respectable hour came around. - Which ages and levels do you teach? I tutor GCSE Level, A Level, undergraduate degree, and adult learners who have been away from study for some time. - Which qualifications do you prepare your students for? GCSEs, A/AS Levels, undergraduate degree and dissertations. I have supported students to prepare for exams with all exam boards: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, and CCEA. - Describe your arrangements for online tutoring. First of all, I ask you some key questions via email so that I can prepare in the best way for our first Zoom session. These will include your subject area and the topic you are working on, your deadlines, and your anxieties about what you need to achieve. From there, we decide together whether a 1-1 Zoom session would be best, or whether you would like to email me your work as a Word document. By working directly on your Word document, I can add feedback and comments in the margin, helping you to develop your ideas, and prompting you to add and expand on the important points that you make in your writing. Zoom sessions can be arranged flexibly around your timetable; we can use email to share attachments and documents to use for discussion during the session. I conduct online tutoring via Skype, and use Google docs or Word for sharing documents. For essay writing skills, I provide detailed feedback using the 'track changes' word document function to make comments in the margins and to edit your writing. - Do you have a personal message for students? Well the first thing to say is that the strongest belief I bring to tutoring is to give the student the confidence to think independently. I want you to learn how to form your own views and opinions, and to evidence them to a high standard. Secondly, even if you enjoy school/university it can feel as though it will never end. The opposite is the case -- those precious years of learning fly by, and before you know it you have to make career decisions. I believe in helping my students to find their passion for learning -- yes, it's important to pass the exams and graduate, and that is what my teaching focuses on. However, the additional focus of my teaching is to make learning fun and exciting, just for its own sake. By focusing on the deeper meanings of your subject, you learn more about yourself and the world. I will be delighted to see your grades rise and for you to progress to the next stage, and my aim is to help you do that by encouraging you to stretch your learning by thinking outside of the curriculum.
