About Mateo
I am a former JUCO basketball player at Mt. San Jacinto College with experience coaching and developing youth athletes through Nike and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. I have coached basketball players across different ages, abilities, and experience levels while creating an environment centered on confidence, teamwork, discipline, and continuous improvement.
I also earned my bachelor’s degree from UCLA, graduating summa cum laude with a 3.9 GPA. My academic, playing, and coaching experiences reflect the preparation, organization, and professionalism I bring to every lesson. I understand that each athlete develops differently, so I adapt my instruction to the player’s goals and learning style. My goal is to help athletes improve their fundamentals, basketball IQ, confidence, and overall, develop a love for the game.
Working with Nike and LA Recreation and Parks, I have supported citywide youth sports and coach-development initiatives in partnership with LA28/PlayLA. I also helped develop and implement the CoachLA Playbook, which provides coaches with practical tools related to effective instruction, youth mental health, safety, equity, belonging, and adaptive sports. My work has included supporting programs for girls, adaptive athletes, LGBTQ+ youth, and underserved communities throughout Los Angeles.
One of my proudest coaching accomplishments was helping lead a girls’ basketball team to a citywide regional championship. That experience really helped me learn how to get athletes ready to compete while still keeping the team environment positive, supportive, and fun.

My approach as a basketball coach is to make each lesson active, supportive, and easy to understand. I teach each skill by clearly explaining the technique, showing players the correct movements and positioning, and helping them understand how the skill applies during a game. When needed, I break the skill into smaller steps, use visual examples, and guide players through each movement before progressing to game-like practice. I adjust drills based on each player’s age, experience, confidence, and learning style. I also provide clear and encouraging feedback while holding players accountable for their effort, attitude, and development.
A typical lesson begins with a dynamic warm-up and ball-handling exercises. We then focus on one or two specific skills, such as dribbling, passing, shooting, layups, defense, footwork, or decision-making. After teaching the fundamentals, I gradually increase the difficulty by adding movement, defensive pressure, time limits, or competitive situations. Lessons usually end with a game-speed or team drill that allows players to apply the skills they learned.
What sets me apart is my experience as both a player and a coach. I played JUCO basketball at Mt. San Jacinto College, which gave me firsthand experience with the discipline, preparation, teamwork, and basketball IQ required at the collegiate level. I currently also coach for Nike and the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, working with young athletes from different backgrounds and skill levels.
My coaching goes beyond teaching physical skills. I focus on developing confidence, communication, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and a strong understanding of the game. I create an inclusive environment where players feel comfortable learning from mistakes while still being challenged to improve.
My lessons are designed for players of all levels, from beginners to advanced athletes, including youth, high school, and competitive players. I can work with individuals, small groups, or teams and adapt each session to meet specific goals, whether players are new to basketball, preparing for an upcoming season, competing at a high level, or looking to improve a specific part of their game. I also bring college-level playing experience, having competed at the collegiate level, which allows me to coach and develop athletes at any stage of their basketball journey.

Mateo is such a wonderful person. I have watched him for several basketball seasons with my granddaughter. The players listen to him and really look to him for guidance. His way of speaking to the girls and not at them really stands above the rest, and his listening skills... through the roof! He is very empathetic while at the same time having motivational words of encouragement for them. It's always positive reinforcement. Any team would be more than lucky to have him as a coach. He is #1 compared to any other coach I've seen!
I know Mateo through professional experiences. As a former women's basketball player and volunteer coach, I can say that he understands the game of basketball and how to connect with players. He's a great mentor, nurturing the confidence of each player while also helping them work on improving their skills. Each player understands and trusts his coaching and judgment. His ability to see the players' individual talents and tailor his coaching to each player is what I've seen in the best coaches I have played for.
