About Gemma

I have previously worked for a leading Addiction charity successfully supporting many individuals with addictions ranging from heroin, marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines and legal highs to alcohol addiction. I have therapeutic counselling skills training from my level 4 certificate in higher education in Social Studies (Social Work) and have have specific training in opiates, maintenance treatments (eg. Subutex and Methadone), Solution Focused Brief Therapy for Addiction, assessing risk and recovery planning for addiction, and Motivational Interviewing in order prepare addicts for change. I work using a person-centred aapproach, understanding that each individual is unique and benefits from different types of support and learning in their recovery and have developed a wide range of tools and techniques that have effectively supported people to change lives for the better. I am a good listener and will always go above and beyond to provide a thorough and high quality of service. My studies in Social work and direct working experience with addicts has enabled me to also help individuals with co-existing issues that often come hand in hand with addiction and recovery such as homelessness, financial difficulties, employment and benefits, parenting and relationship issues, and the physical and mental impact of substance misuse. I have extensive knowledge of all substances allowing me to give harm minimization advice to reduce risk to users and a broard understanding of the effects these the use of these substances . My education has also taught me how to support the family, friends and partners of those facing addiction in a kind, empathetic and supportive way offering a friendly source of support in times of need and practical advice on how to support yourself and love one during recovery. One of the most valuable experiences I have to help support you is being effected personally by the substance misuse of an individual close to me. Not only I studied addiction and therapeutic interventions in order to provide well-researched and the most successful techniques used to aid recovery, I have also worked with hundreds of people day to day facing a wide range of addictions, but I have also had the life experience of how addiction has effected someone close to me, allowing me to understand beyond the textbooks, beyond the 9-5 office hours, and experience the realities of an addict and their loved ones. Due to health reasons I am no longer able to support others face to face in the usual working environment as my health has restricted me. So I would like this opportunity to be able to use all of my skills and education in this field and still do what I do best and support others in recovery. I am here for you.

My teaching style is friendly and informal and I use a different teaching method for each invidual depending on their style of learning and needs. I am able to use video calling, voice calling over the phone, text/whataspp/web chat messaging and email. I can also do home visits or at a convienient location if local and may require an extra charge. I like to establish with each individual what their goals and outcomes are at the first session, as the idea of recovery is so unique to each person. I also would take time to establish what the main issues are that need to be addressed and how this is generally effecting the person's life. I understand that establishing trust can take time in working relationships and will work at your pace when disgussing personal and sensitive issues. When issues and goals are established I work with you to create an overall Recovery Plan. Following this I will establish with you how this can be broken down into smaller, more manageable goals each week to kick start recovery. Sometimes there can be barriers to initially beginning the process of change, so an essential part of my tutoring would be to explore the positives of change with you and the negative impact that not making these changes could have in your life and what barriers and challenges you have been facing up to now. I use alot of motivational work to build strength and self confidence in individuals focusing on their strengths. I can use a wide range of tools in sessions depending on what suits you...such as therapeutic work (exploring thoughts, feelings, emotions), exploring the personal causes of addiction, coping with cravings and impulsive urges, life planning to create new and exiting ways to fill your time, how to manage situations that are high risk to using, and managing and preventing relapse. I will send any information and resources you may find useful such as worksheets for you to complete and encourage ways to keep recovery an ongoing process inbetween sessions by recording any challenges, progress, and thoughts along the way. Each session will discuss further any challenges and progress and focus on overcoming these step-by- step along the way.
