About Mara
I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from the University of Dayton in 2019. Following that, I utilized my skills to provide individualized support to students with Autism across classroom, home, and center-based environments. I worked in behavioral therapy for almost 2 years before pivoting into a teaching role. I began as a substitute teacher for grades K-5, providing support in reading, language arts, science, and social studies. My dedication and effectiveness in the classroom quickly led to a full-time role as a lead kindergarten teacher. I spent 3 years fostering an environment that aimed to grow students academically, socially, and emotionally. Subsequently, I became the 2nd grade reading and language arts teacher where I specialized in decoding methodology. Now my mission is to take what I have learned from these experiences and use it to help individual students meet their goals and be set up for success through personalized tutoring. Whether your child needs a little extra help in a subject, support with homework, or encouragement to build strong study skills, I’m here to guide them with care and help them feel confident in their learning journey.

-My teaching method is tailored to the needs of your scholar because I firmly believe new information sticks the most when it's presented in an engaging and dynamic fashion.
I like to determine what interests them and plan my lessons accordingly.
-A typical lesson will begin with a thought provoking question pertaining to the topic to activate critical thinking skills, followed by a few warm up exercises drawing on our previous lesson. I like to start by activating prior knowledge to increase confidence in the material and practice recall. Then, I'll go over the learning objectives for our lesson so that they know what to expect before jumping into the bulk of the main instruction. I implement the 'I do, we do, you do' instructional model by first demonstrating how to solve a problem, then guiding learners through a few together, and finally having them complete tasks independently to assess understanding. We'll conclude the session by taking 5-10 minutes to create study materials together, so that they can practice between sessions.
- As a former classroom teacher I know how important it is for a tutor to be aligned with the school curriculum. I make a point to get connected with your scholar's teacher(s) to discuss necessary areas of growth and learning objectives.
-My lessons are for elementary school students grades K-5th. I bring expertise in evidence-based reading instruction, supported by my completion of the Texas Reading Academy in 2024. I have a well-rounded background in education, having taught language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies.
