About David
I am a guitarist and composer from Seattle Washington. Beginning in 1995 I studied with Seattle musicians such as John Hanberry, Ev Stern and Milo Peterson. I have led and co-lead a number of different groups in Seattle performing at local clubs, weddings and bars ranging in styles including jazz, funk, swing and old time string music. Most notably I hosted the local Thursday night jazz jam session (2015-2017) and played double bass for the ‘20s jazz and Appalachian fiddle music band Porterbelly (2012-2020). In 2020, I moved to New York City to study at NYU.
I have devoted much of my life to music, and through his decades’ worth of study in the jazz vernacular and wide knowledge of music from the past hundred years, hopes to be able to impart this same enthusiasm to his listeners and students.
I am convinced making music is an essential human experience. I believe anyone can access and develop the resources necessary to engage with this experience. Assisting students in that project is a great pleasure and honor.
I began teaching at Jazz Night School in Seattle Washington
I have studied music and guitar for more than 20 years. I have a minor in music from the university of washington. I am currently completing a master's in music therapy at New York University

Our first meeting will allow me to understand the student by understanding their interest in music generally, the guitar specifically, and their aspirations concerning both. I will ask the student play for me what they have been working on most recently. I will ask them to play a series things to better assess the knowledge base from which they can grow.
I have taught from complete beginners to advanced players. Some have played for years but would finally like to get serious about their playing. Some are returning to the instrument after having played when they were young. Others, have never touched the instrument.
Both expertise and personal resonance are important factors. Choose someone you look forward to meeting and someone who is able to provide you the knowledge and structure you want.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I wouldn't recommend anything past distilling ones thoughts into sensical sentences and that those sentences convey what one intends to convey.

Really enjoyed working with David for the time I took jazz guitar lessons with him. I had a handful of sessions with the intention of deepening my understanding of music theory and deepening my familiarity of the fretboard, and he really gave me a lot to chew on. I have continued to chew on some of these things since then! I love his more holistic approach to teaching, and saw definite progress in my playing from what he showed me. Overall David is solid in communicating both concepts and practices. Would recommend.
David is a vey competent and patient Teacher. He knows the fretboard and how to apply the theory in a straight forward and intuitive way.
