About James
I have always had a profound love of literature and language. All my academic and career decisions have revolved around that fact. I did an English undergraduate degree at Warwick University and wanted to stay in academia so did a Masters at Oxford. I then did a few freelance journalism projects but wanted something more substantial, so started teaching full-time. The classroom served my love of literature well, but I have come back to London to get involved in more theatre, comedy and entertainment as a performer and writer - alongside much private tutoring.

I balance rigour with a pastoral approach: I do want you to be on top of the detail, but I am always happy to zoom out to the big picture explain the value of why we are doing this or that. I have taught English in secondary school classrooms for seven years and tutored 1-to-1 for more than 1500 hours, everything from 8+ entrance exams to Cambridge interview practice. I can help with everything on the 11+ exams, English (I)GCSE and A Level, and all aspects of UCAS applications for any degree - I personally checked and sent over 800 of them during four years as Head of UCAS at a top boarding school near Oxford. I also have some adult clients for e.g. English conversation for non-native speakers. I would usually be expecting to tutor for 60 or 90 minutes. All best, James
