About Emma

Hi there, my name is Emma and I’m a fourth-year medical student studying at Oxford University.

I received offers from all 4 medical schools I applied to in 2019 (Oxford, UCL, Exeter and Nottingham) and I am an experienced tutor here to help you with all stages of the application process for Medicine and related science degrees. From general Medicine application advice, Masters application support, Personal Statement reviews, aptitude test tutoring or Interview tutoring, I can help to boost the quality of your application.

I attained 7.4 in Section 1 of my BMAT exam (achieved by only the top 2% of candidates) setting me apart from other BMAT tutors and proving I know how to ace this notoriously difficult exam.

I offer extremely thorough Personal Statement feedback and guidance for how to embellish your application to medicine more generally. I spend 2 hours reviewing your statement at home and email you line-by-line annotated feedback and overall comments. Following this, students often like to make changes to their draft and send their new draft back to me to review a second time.

I can also supply a range of more advanced reading materials for us to discuss relevant to your interests and boost the quality of your application, and to improve your critical thinking for interviews. My students are free to message me at any point if they have any questions about their feedback.

I am experienced at interview tutoring to improve the quality of your answers, and your general interview skills. Each hour is split between question asking and precise advice and feedback. We will cover a range of standard, unique and challenging questions and I ask that my students email me their personal statement in advance and let me know their preference for either MMI, panel or Oxbridge interview style for the sessions. I produce a written document writing up everything we have discussed for the student to keep following each session.

Personal Statements: I spend 2 hours remotely reading and reviewing each PS, offering feedback, general advice and character-saving rephrasing suggestions, to improve the eloquence and quality of your Personal Statement. Each detailed, line-by-line review is £60. We can also have sessions face to face over Zoom to discuss options for embellishing your application generally and to critically discuss more advanced literature I can select based on your interests, for you to consider including in your PS ( £60 per hour)

Interview practice: £60 per hour, usually composed of 50% question-asking and 50% feedback, offering precise advice to improve the quality of your answers. We will go through a range of standard, unique, and challenging question types in the relevant MMI/Oxbridge or panel interview style, as requested. I write up everything we have discussed for each question in the session, so the student has a series of documents with questions and answers to review in the run up to their interviews.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

After receiving offers from all four medical schools I applied to in 2019 (Oxford, UCL, Exeter and Nottingham), I realised that my advanced skills and insight in all aspects of the application process could enable me to provide gold-standard tutoring to other students wishing to pursue medicine.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I tutor multiple aspects of the application process including comprehensive personal statement advice. Each student sends me a draft of their personal statement and I offer both general and detailed line-by-line guidance to help them improve quality and fluency.

I also tutor BMAT. I have painstakingly created copies of every single BMAT past paper with my explanations for each question written/drawn alongside, a priceless resource which I send out to students after our sessions. I tailor these sessions to the specific question types each student finds challenging to improve their understanding and exam approaches. In my own BMAT exam I scored in the top 2% of candidates, setting me apart from other tutors, and proving I know how to ace the exam.

I also conduct mock interviews, to allow my students to practice their answers to common interview questions used by most medical schools, in addition to specific interview questions based on their personal statement. This builds their confidence, with lots of feedback given to help them improve. On request, I have also designed a more unique repertoire of interview questions for students who would like to practice a 'tutorial-style' interview used by Oxford and Cambridge (although I cannot guarantee that these interviews will be representative of an actual Oxford/Cambridge interview).
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My A-Level biology teacher was a huge inspiration for me. She always made the lessons fun and interactive, with special attention given to each student. I've always strived to emulate this in my own tutoring practice.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Great listening skills, and an ability to quickly notice the areas in which a student is struggling in order to offer tailored advice. An excellent understanding of what is required for a medicine application is also essential!
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

An application to medical school is a long and challenging process. I remember finding working through all the hurdles quite overwhelming in Year 13, especially alongside studying A-Levels. But it is definitely worth it when you get to medical school!
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Achieving a good work-life balance in medicine is something I still find very hard. There is just always so much to do! Luckily medicine is really interesting and you know you're working towards your dream of being a doctor, so it is all worth it in the end.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion for detail! As much as I like offering general useful advice, it genuinely makes me really happy when I can think of specific little things which will immediately boost a specific student's performance. It makes me really proud when I then see them implementing my tips in future sessions or in newer drafts of their personal statement.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I go above and beyond for my students, as seen by my painstaking effort to produce documents with explanations for the difficult questions in all the BMAT past papers, for my students to keep after each session. I am also always available by email to answer any questions they have even after our tutoring sessions have ended.
