My teaching techniques and methods -
I teach acrylic painting through demonstration, experimentation and guided practice.
I explain how and why different techniques work, including colour mixing, tonal relationships, layering, blending, brush control, edges, opacity, texture and paint application. Students learn to understand the behaviour of acrylics and oils and how to use that behaviour intentionally.
A major part of my approach is teaching students how to see a painting before they paint it. We analyse the reference or idea for its composition, dominant shapes, values, colour relationships, focal point and overall visual balance before moving into the actual painting process.
Depending on the student's level and goals, we may work with:

✓Understanding warm and cool colours
✓Value, contrast and creating depth
✓Light and shadow
✓Composition and focal points
✓Brush selection and brushwork
✓Layering and glazing
✓Blending and controlled transitions
✓Creating texture and surface effects

✓Simplifying complex subjects
✓Developing expressive and intentional mark-making
✓Finishing, refining and presenting a painting
For students who already paint, I also analyse their existing work to identify why the painting may look flat, muddy, disconnected or unfinished, and then develop exercises specifically around those weaknesses.
