About Phil
I have been an instructor of geology for over 9 years both at state and community college levels. During this time I have taught over 500 students at the freshmen to senior level (college). I have had the privilege of writing dozens of letters of recommendation to geology majors and minors for successful transfer to graduate school, internships, or careers. Most of my students were first-generation college students who needed help in organizing their thoughts, learning how to take notes effectively, and organizing their time.

My PhD is from Texas Tech University on the paleobiogeography and carbonate stratigraphy of the Alexander terrane in southeast Alaska. I always start with the basics and work up to the fun and empowering concepts that allow my students not only to understand how science is done, but to do science themselves. Lesson plans always involve a component of discussion and questions as I find it most beneficial to involve my students in their own instruction. I have taught geology courses at state and community college levels, and have developed these courses with an online component. These lessons cover subject areas within most every college introduction to geology, historical geology, sedimentary/stratigraphy, and sedimentary petrology courses. I utilize a mixture of video lectures that can be viewed at my student's pace as well as virtual whiteboard programs for tutoring sessions.
