About Laoshi
Learn Mandarin with an award-winning educator, education researcher and teacher trainer.
I am Dr. Shan Jin (Jin Laoshi), a native Mandarin speaker with a PhD in Education from The British University in Dubai and a master's degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) from Yunnan University. I bring more than ten years of international teaching experience across China, Thailand, the United States and the UAE.
My students have ranged from primary, middle and high school pupils to university students and adult learners, including professors from the UK and the US. At Beijing Jiaotong University, I taught American exchange students and delivered interest-based Chinese classes for British and American professors. In Utah, I taught Chinese, mathematics and science through a Chinese-English dual-language immersion programme at Uintah Elementary. I have also taught secondary students in Thailand and online Chinese learners aged 4–12.
From 2019 to 2025, I taught Chinese in UAE Ministry of Education public schools. My work included curriculum and assessment development, intercultural learning and professional development for fellow teachers. I delivered teacher-training sessions in 2022 and 2023 and received Second Prize in the UAE Chinese Teachers' Best Practices Competition in 2022. I previously held the UAE Ministry of Education Educational Profession License for Chinese Language Teachers (2022–2024).
As a former Director of Curriculum Development and Teacher Training at KK-Mandarin, I also developed online teaching resources and trained Chinese language teachers. My research on Chinese language education and intercultural communication has been published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Purposeful Mandarin lessons, tailored to your stage of life and your reasons for learning.
My lessons combine structured language development with practical communication and cultural understanding. We begin with your current level, priorities and learning background, then build a clear plan around what you want to achieve.
FOR SCHOOL STUDENTS
Primary, middle and high school learners receive age-appropriate support in pronunciation, tones, vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing. Interactive activities and guided practice help younger learners stay engaged, while older students develop greater accuracy, independence and confidence.
FOR UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND ADULTS
Lessons can focus on everyday conversation, academic interests, professional communication, travel or deeper engagement with Chinese culture. My experience teaching adult learners, including UK and US university professors, allows me to offer intellectually engaging lessons while explaining new language clearly and accessibly.
HOW WE WORK
A typical lesson combines a focused review, new language in context, guided practice and a meaningful communication task. I use authentic materials, role-play and intercultural discussion where appropriate, with constructive feedback and clear priorities for further practice. The balance of speaking, listening, reading and writing is adapted to your goals.
Complete beginners and more advanced learners are welcome. All lessons are delivered online, with explanations in English or Mandarin according to your needs. Expect patient guidance, thoughtful preparation and a clear connection between each lesson and your progress.

Online one-to-one Mandarin lessons: AED 300 per hour.
All lessons are delivered online.
Online lesson packages: AED 1,500 for 5 hours or AED 3,000 for 10 hours.
The first lesson is free for 30 minutes and includes an initial assessment and introductory Mandarin teaching tailored to your level and goals.
