One of our best tutors. Quality profile, experience in their field, verified qualifications and a great response time. Emily will be happy to arrange your first Philosophy lesson.

About Emily

I hold a first class Philosophy BA degree from the University of Cambridge, and first class (distinction) MSc in Philosophy and Public Policy from LSE.
I offer tutoring alongside my role in the Cabinet Office in the UK.

I've been published twice, and have worked in a research position at the Uehiro Centre at Oxford University, on applied ethics. At Cambridge I received one on one tutorial sessions from world-class academics, and I want to be able to make that kind of learning more accessible to more people. My tutoring experience ranges from children to MA students, with over five years of one on one tuition experience, as well as extensive experience teaching in lycées in France.

About the lesson

AVAILABILITY: Available from 6pm, Monday-Friday. Available for time-limited classes only - one-off or up to a set of 4.

Studying Philosophy at LSE for my MSc and at Cambridge for my BA has given me a profound understanding of philosophical concepts, which I am eager to share with my students. My goal is to help you excel!
My teaching style is interactive and mentorship-driven, tailored to your specific goals and abilities.

With extensive experience tutoring a diverse range of students—from young learners to MA candidates—I am equipped to meet your individual needs. I have a strong track record of helping students achieve top grades, including first-class distinctions on essays, and a high success rate with Oxbridge entrance exams. I am well-versed in AQA A-level, OCR A-level, and IGCSE curricula, providing comprehensive and tailored support across these exam boards.

I provide a complimentary 30-minute consultation to ensure we design a personalised programme that perfectly suits your needs.
Below is some feedback from my students, showcasing their success after our lessons. For more reviews, please check my review section!

"This is David. You helped me prepare for my Oxford PPE interviews from October to November last year. I'm writing to thank you for the incredibly helpful lessons—I was fortunate enough to be accepted to read PPE at Oxford."
"Just updating you that I got my results back, and I got a first! Thanks so much for your help!"

"Hello! Thank you so much for all the lessons. It was such a help working with you, and it definitely gave me a lot more confidence with philosophy!"

"Thank you so much for tutoring Kirstie—you’ve been a great help."

Perfect! Brilliant–Emily gets you thinking. I've been looking for a tutor knowledgeable in bioethics, and it was serendipitous that we met.

Here’s why I picked Emily: 1. Values clarity and precision. 2. Asks effective questions, which was a strategic use of our time and brought me closer to my academic goals. 3. Acknowledges both my potential areas for improvement and my current strengths, fostering a tutor-tutee experience where I feel seen and motivated.

I've now had two lessons with Shipei, and can confirm she's a great student! We're working on both conceptual understanding and perfecting her English, and she's really receptive to feedback from both. One of her great strengths is being open to new ideas, and she is also always keen to improve, which really pays off. Good work!

Perfect! I've had 3 lessons with Emily so far and have been loving it! She is exceptional at explaining philosophical concepts in a clear and concise manner. My favourite things so far are getting introduced to big classic discussions and arguments in the topics we've chosen, and equally importantly, the role of thought experiments and conversation in philosophy. Emily's lessons have helped me navigate the sea of philosophy resources available online and elsewhere with more purpose and direction than before. She is also very organised and punctual, and every lesson is very well-structured and interactive, keeping me actively thinking about and responding to the topic at hand. I very much look forward to having more lessons and would 100% recommend Emily to anybody who is interested in philosophy lessons of the highest quality.

Perfect! I think the main purpose and goal of a Philosophy education is to inspire interest in thought, logic and arguments.

Emily provides a simple introduction into Philosophy that is at once lively, direct and exciting enough to capture the imagination of my 7-year old, sparking in her the desire to learn more and immerse herself in the topics that she has covered. I would wholeheartedly recommend Emily.

When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I've been interested in philosophy and politics since I was 14, when I first read 'The Republic' by Plato. Strangely, what cemented my interest was watching 'The Truman Show' soon after, and being blown away by the idea of general doubt! I decided to start tutoring when I started university, as a part-time job which would allow me to share philosophy with more people, in the way I wished I could have been taught. I loved it so much I never stopped!
Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
My favourite topics to cover with students are usually political philosophy ones, but I also love it when students surprise me by making me see topics I usually wouldn't spend too much time on this with fresh eyes!
id you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
My no-nonsense RPE teacher at secondary school is responsible for my interest in philosophy - she was harsh but fair, and I always try and capture her enthusiasm and skill in my own teaching.
What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
A good tutor has to be, first and foremost, patient. That means listening to your students as much as possible, to make sure they're learning to the best of their ability
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school
The first philosophy class I had in sixth form, we looked at Berkeley's idealism. I was so taken with it that I decided then and there to do philosophy at university - and bored all my friends by talking about it!
What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
When I started philosophy, I struggled with clarity in my essay writing, and it took me a while to gain that valuable skill of clear and direct communication. It's such a useful thing to be able to do, and I love transmitting that to others.
Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
I love feminist philosophy, and have an ambition to be published in the journal 'Hypatia' some day!
What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?
My dedication! I'm proud of how creative and engaging my lessons are, and spend a lot of time planning them. It definitely pays off!!
